The Pacific Crest Trail Is Super Dangerous This Year
California's banner snowfall plus a record number of hikers have kept local search and rescue teams very, very busy
By: Dan White
Jun 16, 2017
The Pacific Crest Trail doles out hazards in cruel ways. Thousands of hikers on the 2,650-mile trek face perils including rattlesnakes, exposure, corneal flash burns from snow glare, and heatstroke. But 2017 is shaping up to be one of the most frightening years in the national scenic trail’s history, thanks to the massive snowpack in the Sierra Nevada combined with the trail’s unprecedented popularity.

Just a couple of months into hiking season, thru-hikers are posting stories of near-death experiences.

Wow. Isn't that bridge the only way into that camp?

One can cross-country from the bridge over the Tuolumne River above Tuolumne Falls over to the GA HSC along the north side of the river. Also, Conness Creek is not too forbidding later in the season. One could probably find a safe alternative crossing or wade after the big runoff subsides.

Hmmm. I don't recognize that as the bridge to Glen Aulin. The water is going the wrong direction, too...

But it is. Here a shot from the same spot as that video was shot, but from this angle you can see the White Cascade for orientation. The bridge is over Conness Creek which runs left to right (north to south) in the video and photo.

Isn't the White Cascade part of the Tuolumne River?

Yes that's right.

Coming from TM to GA you follow the river west. You pass White Cascade on your right, come down past the pool below the Cascade, and turn right (north) and cross a bridge over the river. That's not the bridge in question here. A few dozen yards up the trail is another bridge to the right that crosses Conness Creek and takes you into the HSC, this is the bridge in the video.

Lookie here. Yellow arrows are direction of travel from TM:

As of Thursday, this bridge is 30 yards downstream. It may have traveled further by now. (NPS photo)

hikerchick's photo and report would suggest that the correct word to describe the bridge is now "destroyed" rather than "damaged". I'd think that a large percentage of the wood members wouldn't be reusable in this condition.
