UPDATE (July 9, 4:38a): The Kern County Sheriff's Office confirmed two search and rescue volunteers were robbed at gunpoint.

Officials said it happened on Saturday while conducting a rescue operation for a hiker in medical distress on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

The incident occurred off a nearby trail, in the segment of the PCT between Highway 58 and Kelso Valley Road.

Sounds like SAR got too close to a pot growing plantation. And I bet LEO goes back there with a ton of reinforcements...

What is this world coming to?

I know I'll get a lot of static about this comment but this is why you should be carrying/packing in the back country. Yeah, I know its illegal, l but I'd rather face 12 jurors than 6 pall bearers.

Let's see--the SAR team was not armed, and nobody got hurt. Add in a couple more guns, and it's anybody's guess who gets shot first. or second.

In the very unlikely event you accidentally come across a plantation, chances are the security there will find you first. Carrying a gun won't help. It's just extra weight that will won't be useful 99.9999999% of the time.
