I had no idea the JMT, of course, crosses no less than, of course, six national parks.

Oct 14 start seems strange but, of course, ok.

Wish him, of course, the best of, of course, weather.

Now I need to go find out, of course, what UTMB is.

Note that François is trying to break the record set by a member of this forum (pantilat) who posted about his run up the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne here: http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,27396,27396#msg-27396, and who we talked about when he set the record for the JMT here: http://www.yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?17,76335,76674 .

Leor Pantilat aka pantilat hasn't visited this message board since Oct. 2015, but he still posts regularly on his blog: https://pantilat.wordpress.com/

I presume Leor and François are rivals with Leor sponsored by La Sportiva and François sponsored by Salomon.

Salomon.

Checked the solomon link earlier today and that's pretty impressive about Leor. He is a PNW native and bay area resident (don't know him personally) and didn't realize that he has a speed record for JMT. He does have an excellent blog that I stumble upon all the time...including recently to read a trip report to Mt Florence.

Here is LP's strava account https://www.strava.com/athletes/664698 as I was checking his tracks at Mt Florence https://www.strava.com/activities/65684818

Six? I count three: Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Four if you count Devil's Postpile NM. Which ones am I missing?

Three national parks -- and contact links for their site don't seem to work, at least for my ipad anyway.

I think the writer of the article thinks our national forests are also national parks. I wouldn't be surprised if the author of the article is European and not familiar between the differences of a National Park, National Monument, National Forest or a designated Wilderness Area.

I've never understood the difference between Parks and Foresst for one ~ especially when it comes to permits (UK resident).
BUT: will anyone on the team be carrying a bear canister on what is (to my mind) a totally pointless exercise.
will they be carrying permits?
or packing out all of their litter?
or passing the time of day with others on the trail?
or filtering water?
or admiring the views?
or stopping for a selfie?
or a cr*ppy?
or an etc. etc. etc.no, stop, enough!

A forest can become a park.
But a park is already a forest.
Unless there's no trees.
Then it's a dessert.
A park can be wilderness.
A forest can be wilderness.
And it can not be.

Forest
Park
Wilderness
Permits are free
Unless you're in SEKI
Or start from Jennie

It's all very simple.

He has a support team. Anyone on the team that is meeting him along the way ...
will need a wilderness permit for staying overnight. Since there are a large number
of entry trailheads... they need to coordinate who starts where and be along
the JMT at various spots to resupply the guy trying to do it in record time,
having food and water and maybe a tent and sleeping gear for a quick nap.
Probably change of clothes too.
The guy also has to have a winderness permit since he'll be staying overnight
even though maybe he won't be sleeping much.
My guess is that it is a HUGE support crew.

Would be kinda funny and tragic if some of his support crew start
hiking up Bubbs or Woods, let's say... and get too tired to make it to the JMT.

Oopsie Doodle

He's probably starting from Whitney... but I hope not...

Yup! The guy with speed ascent of Rainier stashed crampons at the half-way point (Camp Muir) and used trail runners in the lower section. It's still pretty impressive though

I've always wondered about people setting speed records on trails that were originally designed to get people out to experience wilderness. To me, it has always been taking time and enjoying getting to where I am going rather than seeing how fast I can get there. I will be interested to see if he accomplishes his goal. Seeing what the human body can do when it is pushed to the limit is fascinating, and that mileage & elevation gain will definitely push a body to the limit. Best of luck to him and his team, I hope they are able to make it back and experience the scenery when they are lucid.
It would be good to know that if I work hard enough, maybe I could do the JMT over a Labor Day weekend and not have to take any vacation days grinning smiley

October seems a bit late?
Also coming from a college track and xc background, I've never been that impressed with these FKT :/ they are quick alright but I feel is there was prize money, many of these records would drop very fast as some of those young marathoners would try em!

I will say however that the unsupported records do impress me IE Heather Anderson...what a beast!
