...STRONG WINDS THIS WEEKEND WITH SNOW OVER THE PASSES BY LATE
SUNDAY...

A potent Pacific storm will move inland this weekend and bring
rain, mountain snow and gusty winds. The winds will begin Saturday
afternoon and continue through Sunday night with the strongest
winds during the day on Sunday. Precipitation will begin as rain,
even at the passes, as snow levels start high. Snow levels will
begin to fall early Sunday evening with snow over the passes
possible before midnight. Expect holiday weekend travel impacts
due to winds and snow over the passes. Some details follow:

* WINDS: Strong, gusty south to southwest winds are expected this
weekend. Winds will be breezy on Saturday and then increase
significantly overnight into Sunday afternoon. Gusts of 60 mph
or more are possible along portions of the 395 corridor and
Sierra ridge gusts will likely exceed 100 mph.

* PRECIPITATION: Light rain is likely over the mountains Saturday
night and will gradually spread southward through Sunday
evening. Snow levels will also gradually fall during this time
before crashing Sunday night as a strong cold front moves
through. The precipitation will end Monday morning behind the
front.

* SNOW LEVELS: Starting at near 9000 feet Saturday afternoon. They
will fall to 6000 feet for Lassen County, 6500 feet for the
Tahoe Basin, and 8000 feet for Mono County by late Sunday
evening. Snow levels will crash Sunday night and fall to near
the lower valley floors as the precipitation ends. Initial
estimates for accumulations over Sierra passes are 4 to 10
inches, up to 5 inches around Lake Tahoe, and light
accumulations generally less than 1 inch as low as 4500 feet. Be
prepared for major travel delays over Sierra passes due to slick
and snow-covered roads.

...HIGH WIND WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH
LATE SUNDAY NIGHT...

The High Wind Watch is now in effect from Saturday evening
through late Sunday night.

* Timing: Winds will increase Saturday afternoon becoming strong
and gusty Saturday night through Sunday evening.

* Winds: South to Southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph
possible. Wind prone areas may see gusts up to 70 mph with
Sierra ridge gusts over 100 mph.

* Impacts: Strong cross winds and travel restrictions are
likely to impact high profile vehicles especially along
Highway 395 and Interstate 580. Aviation impacts are
expected for area airports Saturday afternoon through
Sunday. Localized damage to trees and fences may occur along
with possible power outages.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio
furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds
increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do
is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and
water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in
the event of a power outage.

EVENING TO 1 PM PST MONDAY ABOVE 7000 FEET...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions. Expect
damage to trees and power lines as well. Total snow
accumulations of 7 to 10 inches, with localized amounts up to
17 inches, are expected.

* WHERE...Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to Kings Canyon.

* WHEN...From 7 PM this evening to 1 PM PST Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for reduced visibilities at
times.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will
cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered
roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
