...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM TUESDAY TO 11 PM PDT
WEDNESDAY ABOVE 6000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16
inches, with localized amounts up to 21 inches, are expected.
Snow level starting near 8000 feet and lowering to 5000 feet on
Wednesday with 3-5 inches of snow possible.

* WHERE...Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to Kings Canyon.

* WHEN...From 1 PM Tuesday to 11 PM PDT Wednesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions,
including during the evening commute on Tuesday. Be prepared for
significant reductions in visibility at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions
will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must
travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle

...UNSETTLED WEATHER LIKELY TO PRODUCE VARYING IMPACTS THROUGH
THE WEEK...

A series of storms will move through the Sierra, northeast California,
and western Nevada from mid-week into next weekend with periods of
rain, snow, and wind. This will likely make travel difficult at
times in the higher elevations. Wind and occasional rain and snow
will be the most likely impacts in western Nevada and northeast
California.

Model solutions are in better agreement through Friday, so confidence
in the overall impact of this storm is increasing. The biggest
impact is likely in the Sierra where moderate to heavy snow may
cause travel delays Tuesday and Tuesday night, and again from
Thursday into Saturday morning. To the east and north, breezy
winds will develop Tuesday with rain spreading into the valleys of
western Nevada and northeast California Tuesday evening into
Wednesday morning. Another period of breezy winds is likely for
western Nevada Wednesday.

A second, colder part of the overall storm system is coming together
for Thursday through early Saturday morning. Snow levels should
fall to most valley floors in this part of the storm. Total
precipitation forecasts continue to climb with this part of the
storm as well. At the highest elevations, a few feet of snow are
possible from early Thursday through Saturday morning while the
Sierra valleys could pick up as much as a couple of feet. In the
lower valleys of western Nevada and far northeast California, a
few inches are possible by early Saturday morning.

Details continue to come into better focus with this series of
storms. Anyone with plans that include traveling through the
Sierra should monitor the forecast frequently as timing and snow
amounts will be updated each day.
