EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING...
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 1 TO 3
FEET LIKELY, WITH LOCAL AMOUNTS OF UP TO 4 FEET. The heaviest
snow is likely from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.
* WHERE...Sierra Nevada from Yosemite National Park to the Kern
County line.
* WHEN...From Tuesday evening through Thursday evening.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Blowing and drifting snow and local
whiteout conditions possible. Hikers and campers over the high
Sierra should be prepared for hazardous wintry weather.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant

THURSDAY EVENING FOR THE FOOTHILLS AND THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS
BELOW 8000 FEET...
The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a
* Flash Flood Watch for a portion of central California, including
the following areas, Kern County Mountains, Mariposa, Madera,
and Fresno County Foothills and elevations below 8000 feet in
the Sierra Nevada.
* From Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening
* Heavy rainfall will create excess runoff and bring a threat of
localized flash flooding, mud slides, rock slides and debris
flows, particularly in the vicinity of burn scars. Some roads
may become impassable or become washed out. Residents should be
alert for rising waters on area streams with the possibility of
flooding.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

NIGHT...
Light valley rain and Sierra snow and rain will develop Tuesday
and Tuesday night, with some travel impacts possible for Sierra
and northeast California passes. A much stronger system will bring
lower valley rain, Sierra rain and snow, and gusty winds starting
on Wednesday and continuing until a cold front moves through late
Thursday into Friday morning.
Impact details Wednesday through Friday:
- SIERRA:
* Snow levels will start out fairly high, between 7500 and 8500
feet, Wednesday and Wednesday night before falling Thursday
night into Friday as colder air filters into the region. Several
feet of snowfall are likely in the High Sierra by Friday
morning. Snowfall in the Tahoe Basin below 7000 feet, and in
Mono County below 8000 feet, is more uncertain and will depend
on how fast snow levels fall. Still, significant travel impacts
for the main Sierra passes including Interstate 80 and Highway
50 are likely by Thursday, continuing into Friday morning...
with impacts to Highway 395 in Mono County possible by late
Thursday night.
* Strong winds are likely over mountain ridges, with periodic
stronger gusts surfacing in Sierra valley locations.
- WESTERN AND WEST-CENTRAL NEVADA:
* For Wednesday night and Thursday, rain is expected to develop in
the valleys and foothills of western Nevada. A few snowflakes
may mix in with the rain in the foothills by early Friday
morning, but accumulations are unlikely below 5500 feet.
* Winds are expected to be gusty, which could bring periodic
impacts to aviation and high-profile vehicles along with choppy
conditions on area lakes. Currently the two periods of strongest
winds look to be Wednesday and again Thursday afternoon.
