Ferguson Fire closes Hwy 120 east of Groveland
August 02, 2018 09:15AM
Currently the only way in to the park (by auto, at least) is via 120W from Lee Vining.

Stretch of Highway 120 closed

From the Caltrans web site:

SR 120
[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA & SIERRA NEVADA]
IS CLOSED FROM 11.6 MI EAST OF GROVELAND (MARIPOSA CO) TO THE
TUOLUMNE/MONO CO LINE - DUE TO A WILDFIRE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE
AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

Although if the closure is as extensive as described here... I think that's the eastern border of the park, or very near it.

Edit: Park website says 120 is open east of Crane Flat. Maybe Caltrans meant the Tuolumne/Mariposa County line.

Nope, that stretch is smack-dab on the way to the Big Oak Flat Road entrance. I don't know the Forest Service roads north of 120 well enough to know if you can detour around and still get to the BOFR entrance.

Oooof. The Cherry Lake Road runs from the town of Tuolumne (near Sonora) and eventually ties into 120 just outside the park---but that would be a heckofa detour...

11 miles East of Groveland is Buck Meadows...So that detour would work. At least for now.

On the north end of the fire, a spot fire resulted in the closure of Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120) because of smoke and congestion from firefighting vehicles and equipment. The road is closed west of Crane Flat. At this time, the only entrance into Yosemite National Park is Lee Vining (Highway 120) to Crane Flat.

Yep. That means that Cherry Lake Road, which joins 120 between Buck Meadows and Crane Flat, is not an option
