...Active weather possible this weekend and next week...

After a few days of quiet weather for the eastern Sierra and
western Nevada, the probability is increasing for a more active
weather pattern starting as early as this Saturday, continuing
into next week.

While it remains too early to discuss exact amounts of both rain
and snow, the first round of precipitation is becoming more likely
to occur Saturday and Saturday night, with snow in the Sierra and
a mix of rain and snow in the valleys. This may pose significant
travel impacts in the Sierra over the weekend.

Additional periods of mountain snow, with a mix of rain and snow
in valleys, could occur from Sunday through the middle of next
week. Anyone with travel plans this coming weekend and next week
should check back frequently for the latest forecast updates.

THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of up to 10
inches conceivable. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph on
exposed ridgetops and near the Sierra crest.

* WHERE...Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to Kings Canyon above 4,500
feet.

* WHEN...From Saturday morning through Sunday morning.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Travel
could be very difficult to impossible. Gusty winds may bring
down tree branches.

PST SUNDAY...

* CHANGES...No major changes.

* WHAT...A period of moderate snow coupled with strong south
southwest winds expected. Sample snowfall amounts: up to 1 inch
near Benton, 2-4 inches Bridgeport and Lee Vining, 5-8 inches
Mammoth Lakes, 10-18 inches along the crest including Mammoth
Mountain. Valley wind gusts to 50 mph, ridges to 100 mph.

* WHERE...Mono County.

* WHEN...Snowfall starting roughly Noon Saturday. Peak snowfall
rates 3 PM to 9 PM Saturday. Snow tapering to showers around
daybreak Sunday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be difficult Saturday into
early Sunday in the eastern Sierra, including along long
stretches of Highway 395. Plan extra travel time.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will
cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads
and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

...HIGH WIND WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE
SUNDAY NIGHT...

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a High Wind
Watch, which is in effect from Sunday afternoon through late
Sunday night.

* Changes: Expanded high wind watch southward to include the
eastern Sierra. Potential for damaging winds increasing.

* Timing: Late Sunday afternoon to early Monday with the
strongest winds between 9 pm Sunday and 3 am Monday.

* Winds: Southwest 20-30 mph with gusts 60-70 mph. Wind prone
areas could see gusts as high as 80 mph along Highway 395 in
Mono County especially around Lee Vining.

* Impacts: Hazardous travel is possible for high profile vehicles,
especially along the Highway 395 corridor in the eastern Sierra.
Damage to trees and powerlines could also result in power
interruption.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio
furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds
increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do
is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and
water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in
the event of a power outage.
