just curious.... are people just showing up and camping without a reservation? are they allowing camping at all?

Have no fear. Upper Pines and Camp 4 are both open to walk-ups (no reservation needed) and previous reservations are being honored. Currently, sites are not reservable thru January 21st as an attempt to mitigate potential future campground issues should the Gov't shutdown worsen, I suppose. If you arrive on a Friday during good weather conditions, your campsite choice may be limited.
