...Windy Friday into Saturday, Sierra Snow Saturday...
After several days of warmth, a cold front will be ushering in a
pattern shift for this weekend. We`ll be going from highs in the
60s and low 70s to highs in the 40s and 50s. Sounds about right
for March. Here are the other highlights:
Wind:
* Increasing southwest winds Friday into Saturday. The strongest
winds are expected to be near and north of US-50 where gusts of
35 to 45 mph are likely. Wind prone locations along the US-395
corridor could potentially see gusts to 50 mph.
* Wind impacts include: Hazardous boating on area lakes, strong
crosswinds for high profile vehicles, aviation turbulence, and
sudden reductions in visibility in areas of blowing dust
downwind of desert sinks and dry lake beds.
Snow and Rain:
* Snow will begin moving into the Sierra and northeast California
by daybreak Saturday morning. While accumulating snow is likely
in the mountains, how much will stick to roadways is the
question. There is plenty of remnant heat in the ground, which
could keep roads mainly wet, outside of the higher Sierra
passes, especially given the fact most snow will fall during
daylight hours. Light snow showers may linger into Sunday, but
will be much more spotty in nature.
* If you do have travel plans, it`s a good idea to be prepared
for slick and/or lightly snow covered roads in the Sierra.
* Western Nevada will be largely rain shadowed, but there are
some signals rain showers with a stray thunderstorm could
develop into central and eastern Nevada.
Fire Weather:
* The exceedingly dry conditions the past couple of months
combined with increased winds and a dry airmass will bring
heightened fire weather concerns on Friday. Winds will remain
breezy Saturday, but humidity will also be increasing.
* Gusty winds of 30-45 mph are expected in western Nevada and
lower elevations of the eastern Sierra with minimum humidity
values in the 15-20% range Friday. Exercise care if out on
public lands and follow any burn restrictions in place by local
fire services.
