Cheaper to buy it already cooked at the local concession than to pay the fine. Plus no risk of falling into the hot spring...but would have made for a Darwin Award if he had.

Sigh. People are such idiots.

On the other hand, I do remember visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park about sixty years ago and watching a ranger (who was also a family friend) boil and egg in a tiny geothermal vent while he gave his chat about the place. And when he finished his chat, he pulled out a bandana, extracted the egg, and ate it for lunch.

They do it in Iceland, too. The difference, compared to Yellowstone, is that the vents are on firm solidified lava. In Yellowstone the vents can be on very unsafe terrain.
