The great thing about good trip reports on forums is they last, unlike everyone moving to FB groups. A question about this itinerary, when you camped near the quarter domes, are you talking in the are of the "cross country" short cut between HD and CR ?by desertsherpa - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you all for the suggestions. We will probably do the Mist Trail and Vernal Falls on the way back and will follow the suggestion to go up CR from the Quarter Domes side. Since our permit is for a week we will probably spend an extra day at Sunrise Lakes and do a side trip to Cathedral Lakes as well. That permit is so difficult to get. Since we are in the area we may as well go there too.by jayahc - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Look here for where you can begin dispersed camping. Not much snow this year, you may need to go all the way down to Illilouette creek to get water. Seeing as how you have 3 more nights, why not consider doing night 2 as you planned, but then on day 3 heading over CR (from the south, via the switchbacks near the Quarter Domes) to the vicinity of the sunrise lakes, then on day 4 from there to Mby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It's been a long time since I posted on this forum. I've been mostly grounded by the pandemic, of course, but also have focused my attentions elsewhere. I did manage to get in a brief trip to Yosemite last October, and a couple more just recently. This post is just to update info about a few of the previously mentioned hikes. I was in the country and Brother-In-Law was available for a day hike on Sunday. So we picked an area neither of us had hiked before, the Mono Pass area. Since BIL needed to be at work early on Monday, we drove up Saturday night and stayed in Groveland, then set out relatively early on Sunday. We started hiking at around 8:30, with only one other car in the parking lot. The temperature wasby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
In January, I found out I was going to have 5 free nights near Fresno in May. I found out that it wasn’t a good time to be doing what I wanted to do. I looked into Skyline to Sea and Henry Coe, but I really wanted to be in the mountains and I had the gear for it. The melt was going well and it was 70 and sunny in the valley leading up to my trip. Yosemite faced a number of challenging events in 2018, including floods and fires, but fortunately serious rockfalls were not among them. Forty-one events (including rockfalls, rockslides, and debris flows) were documented in 2018, below the recent (2006-2017) average of 53 events per year, and less than half of that documented in 2017. Alternate title: Conquering the Glen Aulin Curse! Background: We visited our first High Sierra Camp (May Lake) three years ago. We chose May Lake because it would be a short (if a little steep) hike in for our kids, who were 7 and 9 at the time. We stayed only one night, but had a wonderful time and decided to try to get reservations at Glen Aulin the next summer. Just a follow up from my backpacking trip and summit of Cloud's Rest last weekend. The wilderness center was full and we were the 2nd in line, but already there were only 6 spots left for the Happy isle TH quota and no spots available for staying overnight in LYV. QuoteVengeanceASX Any opinions out there on whether or not snowshoes will be needed to climb Cloud's Rest in 2 weeks? Long term forecast doesn't show any new major storms in the next few weeks. Seeing the webcam, I say probably not. Seeing how the snow level is generally around 8000-8500, that would mean you'd be almost up to the quarter domes before seeing snow. For our first Yosemite backcountry trip we decided to do the Cloud's Rest and Half Dome thru-hike exiting through the Valley as a 2 day/1 night, camping near the summit of Cloud's Rest. Quite an ambitious first trip but completely worth the trek. Hi Everyone, My wife is wanting to join me on my backpacking adventures (mostly in the Sierra), so I am looking for a tent that will be a good fit for us. Currently, I have a small 2-man tent that is good enough for me and my stuff for weekend trips. Not so great for a second person. Neither of us are petite - I'm 6'3", she is 5'10", so I was considering a 3 person tent and just deaby hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Great trip report. I really like that area (I actually can't think of an area in Yose that I dislike - maybe lines at the entrance gates...?). My first visit to Yose was a long weekend years ago. Be aware that the Yosemite Falls Trail is closed right now due to a small fire near the top of the falls. Check before you go. Definitely swing over to the Quarter Domes if you do that hike. You can just traverse over to the Quarter Domes from the correct switchback on the trail, or you can come up along the trail that goes to the cables, but then head right as you approach the valley rim.by wherever - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

BDM, please don't think I'm trying to burst your bubble but the hikes you mention strike me as VERY ambitious for a novice hiker...you'd be dealing with searching for unofficial and ill-defined trails in the wilderness, dealing with more than a little hiking-bordering-on-mountain-climbing and all while struggling with altitudes the likes of which you sound like you've not experienced before.
