Global Cooling? An interesting article regardless of one's opinion on the topic. "To confuse the issue even further, last month Mojib Latif, a member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that we may indeed be in a period of cooling worldwide temperatures that could last another 10-20 years." And your view ISN'T political, Eeek? Yeah, right. 30 years ago the same "so-called" experts were predicting the coming Ice Age. You can look that up. It was a major topic in the 70s in almost every publication of the decade. Now thirty years later with more books needing to be sold, these experts have flipped 180 degrees. Say what you will, what he did was beyond impressive. 52 is way too young, but when you do what only a handful out of 7 billion people can do you've probably lived a fuller life than most. What are the usual conditions on the JMT starting in Yosemite around September 1st and ending at Whitney near the end of September? I realize every year can be different. But, in general, is that a good time to tackle those 211 miles? Or would August be better? Mosquitoes? Snow? Available water? Day and night average temperatures? Etc.... Bob Weaver and Szalkowski...please don't ruin the Half Dome hike for the 99.99999999999999% of people who take the proper precautions and do the hike successfully. Quotemrcondron Approximately 1 in every 10,000 people die in auto accidents plus about 1 in 300 is injured in an auto accident. What is it now? Nine people in 35+ years on Half Dome? Get excited about the death rate in cars well before worrying about Half Dome. Perfectly stated. The nanny state already wants to tell us what we can do, when we can do it, and how we can do it. David, why do you say, "Taxes MUST be raised"? You're joking, right? Raise them 100% and I guarantee that you will still have the same $21 Billion dollar deficit. Or more. The politicians in Sacramento will spend all that you give them, and then some. Raising taxes is not going to balance the CA budget. Quotecthenn I'll be the first to say reaching the top of Half Dome, after several weeks of planning and anticipation. I swear I floated about halfway back to the top of Nevada Fall. I haven't felt that sort of sense of accomplishment on a hike since. Ditto to that. I think the Yosemite Visitor's guide shows Half Dome alone as a 10-12 hour roundtrip. So 10 hours roundtrip to Cloud's Rest...I would have to guess that's way better than average. I haven't done it...I've always gone to the top of Half Dome instead. I'd be happy with 12-14 hours to Cloud's Rest and back.by wbmyosemite - General Discussion

I have the adjustable length Leki Super Makalu poles with the Cor-Tec grips and shock absorbers. I had a previous Leki version with plain grips and no shock absorbtion. Someone may have already mentioned this, but if you arrive around May 10th the Curry Village rafting may not be open. I think it usually depends on the depth and/or speed of the current. Maybe the water temperature too. I have been there several times in May when I wasn't able to take my family rafting and it was a huge disappointment. But maybe you have your own rafts. I only knew the word because I saw the mohel on the "Bris" episode of Seinfeld. He butchered Jerry's finger! "Look what they did to my boy." It was a very funny episode. It's been awhile. Mr. Szalkowski caught me on it and I had to self-impose a week's ban from the forum! But I learned my lesson. Check the facts first. Or, as they say, "Measure twice, cut once." I could be wrong, but I would think anything on the Valley floor trails (including those in the Cathedral picnic area) are certainly open to pets. I don't see why not. All the wilderness trailheads that I've seen in Yosemite are clearly marked with "NO PETS" signs. Unfortunately, more than a few in our society only read the signs that they want to read. I've seen many dogs up to the Vernal Falls bridge and some all the way up to Nevada Falls. Well, I agree, bringing personalities into the issue is not good. But when Al Gore claims "the debate is over" and personally attacks others as "deniers" lumping them in with deniers of Evolution and The Holocaust (as did Frank Furter), I think that demands at least a tiny counter response.
