While a reasonable THEORETICAL question, the depletion of nutrients, I'm unaware of any studies in the literature that would support this depletion effect that you postulate. It seems like whatever might be removed is tiny in the extreme, compared to what was just burned up. Lands that have been logged have not, to my knowledge, had any trouble supporting robust regrowth. Hook lake is a common name, used for a number of lakes in the Sierra. What's it near? I've worked with a number of pack outfits, doing trailwork. Which did you talk to?by KenM - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The main determiner of the end of mosq hatching is the lowest overnight temperature. I think the magic number is 34 deg F. Once the temps dip below that consistently, the hatch stops, and you won't see them shortly. Labor day is a rough guide, but elevation matters, as does latitude, and local conditions. Vince, when you make a statement like that, you have the choice of trotting out your credentials as an expert on the subject (presumably a geologist), or cite a reference that supports what you say. Otherwise, it is just another uninformed opinion that is as useless as all the rest. Or some half-remembered memory from your childhood. Or a troll. I've been following this thread, as well as responding on another board. I believe the photo is real. However, I believe the photo is a misrepresentation, although not a deliberate one on the part of the photographer. When I say misrepresentation, I refer to the way I think about nature photography: representing the natural world, and what you would see if you were there. Several problems with your plan. 1. About 20,000 other people want to do about the same thing, at least in part. 2. Your idea of camping near the split may be untenable. You have to camp in the designated camp area in Little Yosemite Valley. From the NPS website: ================ Little Yosemite Valley This is one of the most heavily-visited areas in the park. Several things: This is well covered at: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/chains.htm 1. If you have 4wd or AWD, you only need to put the chains on one axle 2. There are no cables that are anywhere near as good as chains. I've been caught in areas where they would let people with chains go, cables no go. From the yos website: "Chains provide better traction than cables, however cby KenM - General Discussion

Just a point of clarification: There is no Pacific Coast Trail. If you are talking about the trail through Yosemite, you mean the Pacific Crest Trail. This is important, as if you get in trouble, and call 911 on your cell and tell them you are on the Pacific Coast Trail, you will create a considerable delay, as they try to figure out where you are. If you leave anything in Bear Boxes, PLEASE: If you have the choice, store in boxes, rather than bags. It is easy to stack boxes without damaging things, it makes a mess when you stack stuff in bags. LABEL your stuff, with a generous exit date. People leave stuff, use these boxes as trash dumps, people forget stuff. It is ridiculous to have stuff sit there taking up space all summer. Gary, I absolutely understand what you are asking. I understood it the first time. I get the feeling that your assumption is "there must be SOMETHING that I can do that will affect the outcome". But the problem is, that there is actually nothing, except to avoid things that make things worse. Hey, sometimes life is not the way that we want it to be. I, also, find it offensive that this profit-taking is occuring. This is nothing against EBay sellers, who are often honest, ethical people. Of course, people are creative in finding the "cracks"in a system. BUT, now that this has been revealed, the NPS has an obligation to respond to this. The fix is simple. Make the reservations clearly non-transfer-able. This has worked wellby KenM - General Discussion
Gary, I understand that we all wish that things worked the way that we wanted them to, or that we would like them to, but sometimes, they simply don't. Impact. If the employees had to commute, you would have a huge number of extra vehicles moving on the roads, seven days a week, 365 days a year, with the congestion, pollution, gas use attributable. When the landslide hit, they would probably have had to close the park, due to lack fo employees. Additionally, the employees are paid minimal wages, particularly Park Service employees. A lot of misinformation on this thread. Let's try some better info. I am a physician in SoCal.
