Our only Yosemite visit in 2005 saw a late opening of Tioga Road that we missed by one day. This summer we are returning in late July and have our last two nights reserved at TM! We plan to hit some shorter hikes on the day we arrive such as Tenaya and Lembert Dome, then Cathedral Lakes the next day. Upon checking out, we can either hit another day hike trail from the TM campground area or do Norby davidh - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well, getting one of the four cabins with bath at White Wolf is like winning a Powerball Lottery, so I booked a tent cabin in TM for late July next year. Now to convince the wife that it will be awesome! I've read the food storage info on the parks website...can you lock one of the bear storage containers with your cooler, toiletries, etc to keep 'human' bears out, or are they considered communiby davidh - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hello all. This place was invaluable for our 2005 Yosemite trip, and I have continued to be an avid 'lurker'. We hope to return in 2011 and this time get to see the TM area, as Tioga Road did not open in 2005 until the day we left. We saw the valley falls at a near peak that year, so my plan for 2011 is to wait until mid-July and spend more time at TM, hopefully three nights at White Wolf. I'm thinking the same time frame as our last trip may still be best for us...about the third week of June and then hope for an 'average' opening date for Tioga Road. But I have a follow -up question. The day hikes we would be interested in are the more popular ones, such as Dog Lake/Lembert Dome, Elizabeth Lake, Cathedral Lakes, and Mono Pass. In a 'normal' or average year, is snow a problem on tby davidh - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Planning a return trip to Yosemite in 2010 after a fantastic 2005 trip. We caught the falls at a high point in late June due to heavy snowfall that winter but Tioga remained closed until after we left...so we would like to spend 2-3 days this time in TM on day hikes. Barring an unusual winter, is there generally a best time to visit TM? Should we wait until later in the summer, say about mid-Julyby davidh - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hello all. We visited Yosemite in 2005 and enjoyed the park immensely, but the late opening of Tioga meant we missed visiting T.M. by one day, so a return trip is planned this summer. How long is the driving time from Yosemite West to the T. M. area, say the more popular trailheads such as Cathedral Lake, etc? I've struck out on valley reservations, White Wolf, etc and since we stayed there lastby davidh - General Discussion
The daily report says that hikers on the Taft Point trail are having to cross a snow bridge over the creek, and once this melts, reaching Taft Point will be almost impossible. Anyone familiar with this trail , and will it indeed be impossible to cross the creek in a few weeks? I was really looking forward to that trail. Also, our last day in the park will be 6/24. The Yosemite Tioga update site now shows that the east section to Tuolumne Meadows has been plowed... I guess this is the Mono County crews?by davidh - General Discussion
Rick, how is the Mono County crew faring on the east side? Also, I've noticed that the temps have really warmed up and accelerated the snow melt. I would imagine this is good in the long-term for clearing the roads, but doesn't it also accelerate the avalanche dangers?by davidh - General Discussion
Rick, thanks for updates. I'm curious....does CalTran (coming from the east) plow to a specific destination or do they keep going until they meet the crew coming from Crane Flats?by davidh - General Discussion
