But I'm a typical American, all I think about is me, me, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!by cthenn2 - General Discussion
Yeah, I know that. It was just nice to have a "car only" route, which was sort of the case when 140 was "broken". It was a decent drive along 140 not being stuck behind Ward and Mildred in their massive RV driving 10 mph down the steep windy road to the Merced River canyon.by cthenn2 - General Discussion
Darn, now I'll have to fight my way through the hordes of buses and massive RV's taking 140 now . I was actually disapointed when they announced it was temporarily fixed.by cthenn2 - General Discussion
I have kind of an odd question about TM...assuming I could find a RESERVABLE site for only a portion of my planned visit, does anyone know if I can reserve the non-specific site via the internet, and then self-register for any additional days I want to stay at TM? Would I be able to stay at the same site, or do they have specific numbered sites for the reservable sites, and the others for walk-uby cthenn2 - General Discussion
But what about the Tioga Road campgrounds? When will Tamarack Flat open? Isn't that usually the first to open?by cthenn2 - General Discussion
I think the John Muir Trail may be open now (from Valley to Nevada Falls), because the NPS website does not list it anymore as one of the closed trails. I've been checking regularly and this is the first time it was omitted from the list, so maybe it's open now...by cthenn2 - General Discussion
OK, thanks again. So it looks like a Friday morning is better than a Thursday afternoon. I just thought most people coming up to visit would arrive sometime Friday, so arriving Thursday afternoon would be a jump on the weekend campers...but I guess not.by cthenn2 - General Discussion
Thanks for the replies. What about THURSDAY afternoon? I could always take off at noon or so on a Thursday, but is that a better bet than early Friday? Mike, I was looking into staying at Dimond O for a night, but that's a lot of packing, unpacking, and packing and unpacking the gear. East of Tioga Pass...man I don't know, that's a LOT of driving... I'd like to go up there a few times thby cthenn2 - General Discussion
I ran a search on this forum for availability of FCFS campsites north of yosemite valley, and looks like the main response is "get there early". What time is "early"? In summer, is it really THAT unlikely to be able to drive to one of the 4 or 5 campgrounds along Tioga Pass and find a campsite on a Friday? I would be coming from the Bay Area, so making the 4 1/2 hour drivby cthenn2 - General Discussion

Hey abm, sounds like a great plan. How many days are you planning on taking? I'm not so sure about the east end of your route. I assume you will be going up snow creek? That for sure is snow free up to the rim, but above that I'm not sure. The elevations are higher on that end, so I'm sure there would be even more snow then the portion from Yosemite Falls to El Cap. In fact, when I talkedby cthenn2 - General Discussion
Greg, read my trip report post from May 02. The 4-mile trail is not open yet, unfortunately. I spoke to the ranger who said it would likely be the end of May until it is open, as they are still working on clearing it and making it suitable to hike. Also, based on my hike up Yosemite Falls to El Cap, there is likely still a LOT of snow on that side along the Panorama trail. Like I mentionedby cthenn2 - General Discussion
You have impeccable post-timing Bear! I was just up there, and yes, the trail to Sentinel Dome is open. I did not go to Taft point, so I cannot comment on that, but we were able to make it to Sentinel Dome. There is still some snow, but the trail is very easy to follow. The hike up the dome proper is snow covered, which made for a slippery but interesting last pitch. It was fun to glissade bby cthenn2 - General Discussion
So I visited Yosemite for the second time this year, the first time in the hiking season. Well, at least I thought it was! I hiked Yosemite Falls Trail to El Cap, but once you get up to the rim, there is still a ton of snow up there. We hiked about 4.5 miles in 3-4 feet of snow. I had originally planned to try to get to North Dome, but decided on El Cap for whatever reason (the signs in the pby cthenn2 - General Discussion
so when do you think Tamarack flat campground will open? why do they plow east to west? wouldn't it be easier to start at the west end where there is presumably less snow and the plow toward the east over time, giving the thicker snow time to melt down more?by cthenn2 - General Discussion
Cool, I'm headed there this weekend. I wonder if this means the 4 mile trail will be open... Anyone know where the approximate snow line is? If the 4MT is closed, I may try to do Yosemite Falls trail to North Dome, but I don't want to trudge through snow once I get up to the rim.by cthenn2 - General Discussion
