balzaccom, Thanks for the post regarding cairns. It needed to be said.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
After an 8-year absence to the High Sierra, in mid August I ventured a return to the area for a week of day hiking. Due to age and assorted medical problems backpacking was no longer an option for me. I did 3 day hikes inside Yosemite near Tuolumne Meadows on my 3-day pass, including one day with chick-on, basilbop, and JustKeepWalking which was a wonderful reunion with prior hiking companions.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Just read somewhere on the net that the Mt. Hoffman trail is closed. I don't know if that means the lower portion to may Lake or just the upper use trail to the summit. Anybody know anything about this or why it might be closed? Jimby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks, eeek This map shows exactly where the fork is. Jimby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks, I'll have to look up that book. Jimby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
On a backpacking trip in 2010 I took the Budd Lake Trail up to Echo Peaks and down below Echo lake for the first night. At the time there were no maps for this trail so I followed instructions from a friend. Instruction called for going up the Cathedral Trail about 1/2-3/4 mile and then cut left through the woods and intercept the desired trail. This I did. After awhile it became apparent thiby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Actually, I've already been to Gaylor Lakes for a day hike. In the same day it's also a relatively easy continuation from there (off trail) to the overlook above Upper Granite Lakes. Views from there are terrific. The only reason I thought of Elizabeth Lake was because it was a short hike option to someplace I've never been.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the replies. I also contacted the Park Service who basically said the same thing, just ask. The lady I contacted said access may depend on how full the campground is, which will determine available parking space. And yes, it's near some restrooms. Jimby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I've been planning a number of day hikes for this summer in and around Yosemite but am confused regarding parking access for Elizabeth Lake. The trail shows access from both the Visitor Center and the Tuolumne Meadows Campground. Does the park actually permit people to park in the campground for day hike access to Elizabeth Lake or is that access for campground people only? Otherwise, I presuby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Parklover, thank you for the clarification. I was deeply concerned about committing to the purchase of cross-country airline tickets, hotel reservations, and car rental for a week of day hiking in August, only to be turned away at the Tioga gate! In the unlikely case it happens again, at least I can cancel everything but the cheap--no refund airline tickets. Jimby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was just about to make hotel and airline reservations for a week of day hiking in early August. Does this mean I can't do that until this system goes away? I'm very concerned. Jimby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've been away from Yosemite for 8 years. Would someone explain to me what day use permits are? Does that mean day hikers had to have a permit? Jimby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I forgot to include LYV as a popular location for bears. That location was popular for bears long before we even had permits.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I wonder how many back country hikers in Yosemite have ever actually seen a bear or had their campsite visited in the night. The only ones I ever saw were either in the valley or near the T-Meadows permit office. Most of them hung around the car campers, High Sierra camps, and Little Yosemite Valley.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteAnotherDave There have been times in the Park when, overcome by the sheer 'Yosemite of it all', I wanted to drop to the ground and cry like a baby, while shaking a fist at the sky and unleashing a Tarzan yell of victory, both at the same time.] Upon witnessing such behavior, just smile back with quiet amusement and move on. And yes, it's contagious.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It is so sad that this happens just about every year, primarily to teens who think they are immune to gravity or the flow of water. Until I heard it was Nevada Fall I was wondering, "Oh no, not Vernal Fall again!"by tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So, does this all mean we can once again park wherever we damned please at any trailhead? It was my understanding the park stopped that practice, making it mandatory to use the shuttle bus. I'm envisioning 40 vehicles parked at Cathedral trail head and more drivers milling around looking for a nearby spot.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
DC, Much of what has been said is true, particularly from MRCondrun (Olde Dude). Unfortunately, the area around LYV is notorious for bear activity, second only to the car camping areas. I don't even consider LYV part of the back country because there are so many day hikers and backpackers present. Poor food protection practices, particularly from some of the day hikers, are a main draw for beby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Wow! I knew Yosemite had a lot more snow melt this year but I'm astounded that the Glen Aulin aluminum bridge is impassable. No wonder stream crossings are such a challenge right now.by tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi, My only two cents would be to avoid camping close to any of the Sunrise Lakes or any water supply. Mosquitos are definitely an issue this time of year if that is an issue with any of your group. If you can settle down a good 200' from a lake or river you will be much better off. This is why I always preferred mid-August. Otherwise, you are in for a great trip! Enjoy. I'm afraid they are serious. These people practice nut job religion disguised as science. They even have their own museum somewhere showing humans and dinosaurs walking side by side. Families take their children to this museum to explain the 6,000 year history of Earth! They are fostering a new generation of scientific ignorance. As far as I'm concerned this is criminal negligence.by tomdisco - General Discussion
Just think. If you break your child in right, maybe in 17 years he will be ready to tackle all 3,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail! For now, just enjoy your first visit to Yosemite. You will love it. Jimby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've posted this before but it's worth another laugh. In Camden, Maine one of the local newspapers always has an outrageous story to celebrate April Fool's Day. North of town is a large lake called Megunticook and beside the lake is Megunticook Mountain which features some rugged cliffs overlooking the lake. The cliffs also have an ocean view. The story claimed that an "out-of-town"by tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
snackpacker, I agree with what Dave said. If you are first timers to Yosemite do the Valley, Glacier Point, Mariposa Grove, and Toulumne Meadows routes by car. From these locations pick a variety of day hikes to whet your appetite. From this first trip experience you will have a much better idea where you would like to go on a subsequent year for actual backpacking to see what's "over thby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Veovis, Listen to what everybody is telling you about snow. Many years ago I returned from an overseas naval deployment in late May determined to go backpacking. Back then there were no permits or areas restricted from camping. A friend and I camped the first night between Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall after a beautiful day and went to sleep under a clear sky. We woke up to 6" of heavy weby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
