Good size contingent of Search & Rescues volunteers continuing with the search for George, today. They were looking under every bush, walking off trail down the drainages and just about everywhere else. As we walked by, one of the guys yelled out that he had found a black, white and gray shirt which happens to be the color George was wearing when he went missing. In case anyone else is interested, here is their response... "Significant sections of the trail are still covered in snow and that could make routefinding difficult." Nothing a GPS couldn't handle.by cornbread - General Discussion
We are heading out this Sunday for what is supposed to be the GCT loop but as of June 11, the park website says that the 10 Lakes area has 100% snow coverage. I have yet to hear back from park service for an update, so, does anybody have any info about this area? How much snow might have melted in two weeks? If there is snow, how deep might it be?by cornbread - General Discussion
My wife and I did this hike on the 13th. We started at the 4 Mile Trailhead. It was roughly 13 miles and took us 8 hours because we brought some newbies with us. It is a great hike and we will definitely do it again. I suggest parking at the backpacker parking lot near Happy Isles and catching the bus to stop #8, Yosemite Lodge. It adds about a 1/2 mile to the hike but the bus is easier in the moby cornbread - General Discussion
We went up 4 mile and down Panorama on Saturday and had cell coverage (Verizon) for nearly the entire time. We have also had cell coverage for the whole Upper Yosemite Falls hike, also. I should qualify this by saying, we didn't talk on the phone, just noticed we had coverage.by cornbread - General Discussion
Some more info from Mr. Half Dome... I thought his book says not to ascend if the weather looks bad. I watched Half Dome slip in and out of cloud cover all day. Maybe he pushed it for the Welsh fellows. Regardless of how he says the weather was, all forecasts predicted rain and thunderstorms and he, of all people, should have known that those really form around mid-day. Just sayin'...by cornbread - General Discussion
Some more info... June 14, 2009 - At about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009, Yosemite Emergency Communications Center received 911 calls regarding an individual who had fallen from the cables on Half Dome. Manoj Kumar, a 40 year old male from San Ramon, California, had gone to the top of Half Dome and was descending. Day time weather conditions mirrored those of the last several weeks withby cornbread - General Discussion
Just for reference, this pic was taken at 3:04. The guy fell at 3:40... It was really raining hard between 3 and 4.by cornbread - General Discussion
Wow, That's crazy. I heard the YOSAR helicopter fly over no less than 7 times on Saturday. We got rained and hailed on and when it rained, it rained very hard. The top of Half Dome was hidden by cloud cover for much of the day. I even said to my wife that some not very smart people would be attempting it. I was amazed at how completely unprepared people were...especially when you could see the inby cornbread - General Discussion
Quotemrcondron Decending on the north outside is the way to go. Don't know if you guys have seen this, but here's what can happen when you go outside of the cables... From the website... My wife and I did the hike on Sunday. We got drenched, like "just got out of the shower" drenched on the mist trail. The last time we did it, we barely got wet and that was in may also. This place just never gets old...by cornbread - General Discussion

I was ready to use one on the bear we encountered on the 4 mile trail but, thankfully, I was able to scare him away before it came to that. I gave him the "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" routine a la Gandalf. I have actually used that twice and it has worked both times.by cornbread - General Discussion

My wife and I both use REI "Traverse" poles. They have the shock absorber feature which is great for going downhill. The are made for REI by Komperdell and since they are from REI, we can always return them when, and if, they ever break. We never go on any hike without them.by cornbread - General Discussion
The brand I've typically seen used is Gold Bond. Taken from their website..."It absorbs moisture, controls foot odor and odor-causing bacteria, provides maximum strength itch relief, and cools and soothes irritated skin." Never used it myself, sock liners are fine.by cornbread - General Discussion
My wife and I stayed at the Evergreen Lodge last year. very peaceful, relaxing and quiet. The restaurant is phenomenal, excellent food. The cabins are a bit dated but we liked it that way. They do have a bunch of new cabins which are opening this month. There is a nice little store there as well. It's about an hour from the valley floor and maybe 20 minutes from Hetch Hetchy.by cornbread - General Discussion
