It does make sense to have two different speed limits on the same road. In one direction you could be approaching a congested area, and going the other way the problem area is behind you. You might come upon stopped traffic as you approach the entrance gate for example so the safe limit would be slower than for the people that are leaving the park. Was the ticket for a lower speed than what thby traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So what do we do? Out law light bulbs and delay the temp increase by a few minutes? Outlaw cars, industry and electrical power? Destroy our economy while China builds two new coal power plants every week? If we want to prevent a possible problem, we have to do it in a constructive, not destructive way. We must create a better way, not just unplug the world.by traildad - General Discussion
I can understand that world wide averages from the 50's might be questioned. Does the major new analysis prove that temps taken in the 50's are correct? I would bet that if you followed a family tree so to speak of climatologists you would be able to trace them all back to a few college professors. On top of that, who studies to be a climatologist? Mostly people that already believe that the enviby traildad - General Discussion
Was the debate ever about real changes in temps? I think the real debate is about the claim that man causes the change. Temps can go up and down as shown by the coming and going of the ice ages. I read an article that a Nasa supercomputer model of a supernova shows that supernovas don't explode but rather collapse back in on themselves. Does this mean that there are no supernovas? No, it means thby traildad - General Discussion
Maybe I assume that the intent is not to prevent every possible problem. We can't give them a test and tell them to come back when they are grown up. Willful disregard of safety is not easy to prevent in the wilderness. I think we would go a long ways to prevent the kind of problems mentioned in this post simply by penetrating that false sense of security many people wrongly have. I can't say I really disagree with the concept. Which of those apply to Half Dome? #1 seems to be the majority of problems for the cables and even along the route there. A little interactive education could make a difference.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Pushing the limits of safety and skill is quite different than being clueless. Signs can be overlooked, dismissed, discounted or just ignored. What I am suggesting is trying to pierce the the concept of "domesticated wilderness" that developed National Parks can engender.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It seems that it is just too easy to get in way over their heads. Someone raised in the city just doesn't understand how isolated they are a few miles into the wilderness. Education seems to me to be the best, even though not perfect, solution. A simple test on the application form would help. Question #1, "What will you do if there is lightening in the area?" I have used that type of radio quite a bit. Mine can be locked, I assume most can. One time I got separated from my wife and she had managed to change the channel. From then on I locked them both. As I recall there was a small lock symbol on a button that when pressed for a few seconds the settings would be locked. I have used my Wenzel Starlight three times in Yosemite and three other times in the Sierras. There are times when staking it out is an extra problem. My last trip I had to run the guy rope over a log before staking it down. Last year I tied the line to a branch and dropped the branch off a ledge to keep tension on the line. I found the entire area from Tuolumne Meadows to Glen Aulin HSC down to Water Wheels Falls to be very photogenic. If you enjoy water photos you can get some neutral density filters and slow down your exposure for some nice shots. There are many waterfalls to enjoy. The Weather Channel has text message weather reports. Sign up and enter 95389 to get Yosemite weather. QuoteQITNL Nice trip! Was this last weekend? Instead of Sunrise HSC, I recommend hiking a little further and camping at Upper Sunrise Lake. There are some real nice campsites and you get a great sunset from the slabs facing west. If it's clear you can see the lights of the central valley. Well I did enjoy having a outhouse for a day. I hiked from the Cathedral Lakes trail head on Sunday the 7th. Camped at upper Cathedral lake Sunday eve. Then over to Sunrise HSC. While at Nevada Falls on Friday I saw people swimming above the falls. I took some video and then went to ask them if maybe they thought they were better swimmers that the people that died while back. I tend to use filtered water for everything. Drinking, cooking and dishes. It can be a bit of a hassle, especially if the water source is not really close. I prefer to err on the side of caution as I don't want to be sick on the trail. However, I can't help but wonder if it matters for everything.
