I like this idea! When I was there last Saturday, we helped a young man who was wet and cold, and when I asked him why he came up without a coat and just a cotton t shirt and thin rain poncho, he said someone at the visitor center said it was going to be a nice day. Why could there not be a permit system like any other popular hike (Mt. Whitney) that would limit the amount of people on the trail and cables on any given day? In connection with the permit process there could be some education regarding the danger of hiking and climbing in bad weather and without proper preparation. Have you ever been to Mt. Hood?
