When you drive the road to Hetch Hetchy, from the entrance station onward, you are on the railroad grade that this Shay rolled upon. That's why it's basically a constant grade, although it is much steeper than most railroads, since a Shay had a lot of torque. If you go to Rail Town in Jamestown, they have this car which also rolled upon that grade.by YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

The camera is on the Alder building, across the street from the Yosemite Lodge front desk. I give it five years before some cedar trees grow up in front of the view.by YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The HSC's don't bother me too much, but there are real questions about what should and shouldn't be allowed in designated wilderness. I think one of the problems is of course, human waste and water quality. Vogelsang and Glen Aulin have some real issues since they are so close to streams. When I camp, I'm required (and choose) to camp 100 feet from water. The Dining Room at Vogelsang is about 10fby YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Actually, now that I think about it, the one on the Mariposa Grove road was probably 1905, not 1902. It was a USFS/YNP boundary. (of course, no NPS in 1905, but 1906 is the year that the Yosemite Grant was added to the park)by YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've always been interested in finding the oldest benchmarks I can. On the way up to the Mariposa Grove, the current road passes close to the original 1864 Yosemite Grant boundary, and there's a benchmark off the side of the road that is dated 1902. Has anyone ever seen one with an older date than that? Also, if you look at a 7.5 map you'll see the orignal boundaries of the Yosemite Grant forby YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It's been good the past couple evenings. The water level is low, but the sun has been just right. Tonight might be the last chance before this new weather rolls in, then perhaps next weekend will still work if the storm breaksby YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Ah, yes. BTW, that metal sign saying "Old Yosemite Grant" is from a 1942 blister rust camp. Pete Devine and I were actually looking for a rock cairn that Pete had been to years before, but we couldn't find it. Might have been under snow.by YosemiteSteve - General Discussion
If you like old maps of Yosemite, check out the "Maps" episode of Yosemite Nature Notes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_U4Vwawkc0&hd=1 Of course, I recommend you watch in 720p HD and full screen. This episode even features an interview with filmmaker Ken Burns.by YosemiteSteve - General Discussion
Yosemite now has a propane canister recycling program. I think there are special trash cans in the campgrounds. The cannisters are taken to a special station in El Portal where the left over propane is recovered and then the steel is recycled.by YosemiteSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
