This reminds me of the joke with two hunters running from a bear (punchline: I don't have to outrun the bear, I have to outrun you) In this case, the other camper didn't have to make sure no bears were around - just had to make sure the didn't come to his campsite :-)by ags - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Can't help regarding temperature and social distancing. That will have to be your call. Did want to point out that during hotter days in the mountains, there is danger beyond the heat alone. Hotter days generate more convective (rising) airflow, which can result in formation of Cumulonimbus clouds (thunderclouds). Very important to exercise good judgement when at high points, particularly in tby ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

i'm trying to get wilderness permits for trips into the east side of the Sierra this August. Permits are handled by recreation.gov. I've reviewed what I can find online, and the most detail I've found is "advance (reserved) permits are available 6 months before date of entry" and are opened at 10 AM ET. I don't see how this can be valid - at least not precise. How long, exactly, is &by ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Every time I hear about "restoring Yosemite Valley to it's original beauty" I think of this specific event. I haven't found anything other than brief references to it, and cannot claim detailed knowledge of the extent of the changes it spawned. I've always wondered -- and even searched to learn -- why there is a sign on BOFR just west of Crane Flat marking 6192' of elevation. The 1000' multiple signs are common, as are signs for populated towns indicating actual elevation (e.g. Buck Meadows, Groveland...). Is the sign location the actual site of Crane Flat - or what the average elevation or elevation at the center of that "locationby ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Is that the new establishment in the location that used to be Hayes St. Cafe? That was a pretty good place for breakfast (with giant coffee cake touted as fresh-baked daily). They closed a few years back - I think I heard it was retirement - and it didn't reopen for some time. I was wondering if/when it would. Mexican is a good add to the area. Found the River's Edge Restaurant in Knight's Ferry (east of Oakdale off HWY 120/108) by accident one trip. Just had a soft drink and some snack (don't recall what) but the location is very nice. Sit outside on a warm summer day on their expansive back lawn and you can even drag a plastic chair into the Stanislaus River and sit as long as you like.by ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Is the shot labeled "lookout near Sunrise" (and subsequent under snow from chick-on) taken from 9242 looking west, with Tenaya Cr. in view? Or looking north, with outlet from Sunrise Lk(s)? Or other? Took Ebbetts Pass back from the east side on Sunday 6/2. Wow, it is beautiful. Still some 8' walls of snow remaining along parts near the pass. IIRC they struggled to get the road opened by July 4th in 2017; I was surprised to learn it was already open this year.by ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
+1 for what chick-on has to say. We were in 10 Lakes basin for July 4th 2011 (similar-ish snow year) and were climbing over 6'+ snow drifts down in the basin when trying to stay on trails. Not sure if you've seen the descent into the basin from the west (Ten Lakes Pass). It's not particularly difficult IMO, but there are switchbacks, steps, drop-offs and some exposure. Very similar to Balzaccom. This is the "go-to" trail for out-of-town visitors. I don't mind at all. One time, returning from a 6-ish day backpacking trip we ended up changing itinerary and decided to exit down Mist Trail. We each had (empty) bear canisters strapped to the outside of our packs. We cycled to GP this past weekend. What a privilege to have the opportunity to enjoy the route without motor vehicles. As might be expected, the water flow is noteworthy. It was well worth the effort, IMO. If you do visit, you'll quickly realize that the road is still in a bit of rough shape. Some loose cold-patch (macadam) is in use, and contrary to what I've read in some reports, the road haby ags - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
