That's too bad; lately I've had pretty positive experiences camping in the valley. People who don't camp often have no concept that your campsite is your "home" when you're there, and will walk through as if it's just a park...I don't think they're trying to be rude, just don't have a clue. Quotemrcondron Yes, stay out of Yosemite, but Gary why poo-poo the whole idea of bike racing? What do you like? So many cities are groveling for the "prestige" of having them whiz through, it's nice that Yosemite officials didn't do likewise. The officials who made the decision should be congratulated. This bike race is the most over-promoted, over-hyped, snooty, boring event I've seen. Haven't tried one, but it seems like it would work better than a book. Books are awkward to me, because you've got to hold them, which means keeping body parts outside the sleeping bag, and lighting is still an issue to deal with. Oakhurst and Mariposa are probably the closest "gateway" towns where you'd have a chance of finding a reasonable room without advance planning. Assuming it's a general Yosemite visit...see the sights, take some hikes, bike around, have a picnic, etc., I'd guess that staying outside would be more enjoyable. Mariposa and Oakhurst both are 1-1.5 hours from being parked in the valley, or you can head up to Tioga Road, Glacier Point, etc. In the more crowded areas, you just have to park a normal sized car instead of a small bus. Quoteeeek I've heard claims like that quite often over the years. QuoteFrank Furter When did the first symptoms occur in relation to arriving in the valley. Most likely acquired outside the park or from a fecal-oral route (poor hygene in toilet facilities). Crowded or not, you can't beat the valley for easy access to wonderful scenery...not that there's anything wrong with Crane Flat, but if you stay in the Valley you can easily park and stay put for your 5 nights, hiking and seeing everything around on the easier trails.
