Now, hold on here. You're going to have to type a bit slower to allow me to comprehend what you are saying. You told me that a 6 degree increase in Celsius would translate into an 11 degree Fahrenheit increase. Okay, I agreed with that due to my previous math error. But, if National Geo's premise, per your calculations, is that the average temperature will increase those 11 degrees - in thiby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Oops....my grade school teacher always told me to double-check my math. Sorry about that. I was thinking in terms of specific temperatures instead of intervals. Thanks for catching my error. As you state, 55F would be about 66F if Celsius temperatures rose 6 degrees as National Geo premised. A few points though: 1. Even an 11 degree (F) warming would be a 20% increase over current averagesby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
I'll give credit to Bee for using the term "global warming" in the topic title. Most of the political hucksters (I'm not saying Bee is one) have gone on to the much safer "climate change." That way they don't have to explain why the Earth has cooled every year for at least the last ten. Global Warming only gave them a 50% chance of being right. Anyone know what the Sierra snowpack is this year compared to this time last year?by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Does anyone have any figures on the number of people who do the 211 miles on the John Muir Trail solo compared to those who go with 2 or more fellow hikers? I have plans to do the JMT trip one day (I know...man plans, God laughs), but it's hard to find someone who can devote 20-30 days to doing it. Or even wants to! But I do. I know it's only about 10% of the length of the Pacific Crest Trailby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Ryno 98: You covered most of my pet peeves. I don't speed in the Valley either, but I do wish people would use the turnouts. The rangers at the entrance stations should (and could) do more to remind people with their 40 ft RVs to use the turnouts. However, my biggest "pet" peeve is PETS on wilderness trails. It gets worse every year. And the rangers absolutely refuse to enforceby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
This site may not be "official." But it should be! I get as good - if not better - information here as I do from any other similar Yosemite News link. And if you have a question, you'll get some great (and usually quick) answers here. This might be like taking advice about the Tour De France from Lance Armstrong! "I've gone up the Alpe d'Huez....it's not that bad!" EEEK's probably done this a few more times than most. I think it depends on a lot of factors. While the Mist Trail is not that bad, the John Muir Trail coming down is quite a bit easier in my opinion. No slick steps or precipitous drop offs to worry aby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Hey bill-e-g: Thanks for the shot from Mt. Watkins. I hadn't seen that one before. I've taken a lot of pictures from the saddle, but they fail to show the degree of incline like your picture does. OH GREAT! Now everytime I read a newspaper article I am going to wonder if it was another "I only had 45 minutes" job! No wonder the Fourth Estate ranks right up there with lawyers and politicians. We all make mistakes, but when the writer stated he viewed Tuolumne Meadows from Half Dome, that automatically disqualifies the article from being in the top 5, OR TOP 500, of articles wriby wbmyosemite - General Discussion

Hey David, I re-read my message to you. I musta been off the meds that day! (Even though I don't take any.) I guess my point was that if everyone would be just a little more cooperative and courteous the fun level would go up and the danger level (of driving in the park) would go down. When I'm in Yosemite it is rare that I'm in a hurry. If I wanted to be in a hurry, I'd stay at work. Slowby wbmyosemite - General Discussion

David Senesac wrote: "...I'll likely go out of my way to annoy them." So let me get this straight: You are so narcissistic and self-absorbed (redundant yes, but in your case worthy of the redundancy) to pull over your gas-guzzling RV to let 5 cars pass because you can't maintain 15mph going up a grade. So (in your mind) the driver behind you becomes "aggressive." I'm suby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
I'm with you on the dangerous drivers. But just like the park service will not do anything about pets on wilderness trails, they also do not do anything about enforcing the use of turnouts. I'm rarely in the park when some guy in a 300 foot long RV (it seems like 300 feet) refuses to use the turnouts and 12 cars build up behind him. Invariably this causes someone to try to pass in a no-passby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Jon, you have my vote. While I too remember the good old days with a nice campfire back in the midwest, I'd prefer going to Yosemite without the heavy smoke during the night. But one battle at a time. I'm still waiting for the year when I don't see people with their dogs at Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls or beyond. I've never understood why the Yosemite Park Rangers don't do something about thaby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
In addition to Lucrativ's excellent recommendation of the Taft Point Hike, if the Glacier Point Road is open, another easy and scenic hike is Sentinel Dome. There are some great views from the top and it is a relatively easy hike and not too far. Plus you can use the same parking area for Taft Point. Here is a link to information about the hike. http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/SentinelDome_00by wbmyosemite - General Discussion

I was in Yosemite on Saturday the 12th. I didn't see snow anywhere in the Valley. While is was nice to be there in April (without chains or a 4-wheel drive), I'm hoping there will still be a few more storms before the end of May. I don't know what percent of normal snow pack they are at this year, but it still couldn't hurt to have more.by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
"Yet a skilled photographer can still produce something fresh and worth buying." Wow, I could not agree more. I think Vince is missing the point along with his sarcastic reference to "Mr. Adams, Jr." While I'm not looking to sell any photos, that doesn't keep me from taking thousands of new ones each year in YNP. 999 might be discarded, but each year I seem to take a few tby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Hey Vince, Basing your life philsophy on what Larry the Cable Guy would do is not something I want for Yosemite. I'm sure ole Larry would like a drive-thru McDonald's at the base of Yosemite Falls. Is the Pope Catholic? If the family hasn't contacted a lawyer yet, I'd bet 50 of them have tried to contact the family. Things happen. There really should not be a lawsuit, but there will be. Does anyone know exactly where this happened? I've been on that trail several dozen times. I can think of a few places on the trail where you could fall 300 feet. YPW, Nice picture. I'm not quite sure I've seen a picture of the backside of Half Dome from that vantage point. How far along the trail to Cloud's Rest were you when you took that picture? y_p_w You are right about the brutal part of the Half Dome hike. It certainly can be. And the cables are 800 feet according to one of my Yosemite guide books. 2 Comments: 1. I wish I was in the kind of shape to do that much hiking in a week! 2. If you want to save yourself a full day, you could do Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and Half Dome all on Tuesday. It's the same trail. The 17 mile roundtrip route to Half Dome follows the same trail to Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls and then goes to Half Dome from there.
