I'm assuming with the heavy snowfall this winter that the cables may not go up as early as they usually do. Has anyone heard of an estimated dates for the cable reinstallation this year? A few years ago it was sometime in June before they went back up and I'm wondering if it will be that way this year. Thanks...by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Hey Jon, no problem. I knew you would get back to the forum at some point. To paraphrase Yogi Berra on a NY restaurant, "Yosemite is so crowded that no one goes there anymore." Actually, while the Valley can be crowded and trails to Half Dome and Yosemite Falls can be packed, once you get past those, Yosemite is quite un-crowded. Last year I hiked from Lukens Lake to the top ofby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Hey, Jon, thanks for the tip. I DO believe I would enjoy the solo way. I can see the advantage of sharing pack weight with another person, but I've really always wanted to do the JMT as a way of just enjoying the planet before I die! I've hiked much of Yosemite (mostly day trips), but the thought of doing 220 miles through the Sierras really appeals to me. I don't know that I would or could eby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
I am planning and preparing to hike the JMT this summer. (North to South.) Does anyone have any experience doing these 211 miles between Yosemite Valley and Mt. Whitney? If so, can you answer these questions: 1. What is the percentage of solo hikers compared to those that go in groups of 2, 3, 4, or more? 2. How heavy was your pack (if solo hiking) when fully loaded with food and gear?by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
NPR and Yosemite? Examples for and against government funding. I don't like NPR because it leans so heavily to the left. If not supported by my tax dollars and yours, NPR could not exist in a free market environment. If you disagree with that, see if you can get NPR to give up their government funding. NPR lives in a non-Darwinian world. If left to survive on its own in the free marketplaceby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
It's certainly too bad when someone gets injured or killed in Yosemite or any other wild place. But I hope we never have to put up signs every 50 feet warning people of potential dangers. The beauty of Yosmite and places like it (at least to me) is knowing that Nature is big, grand, AND powerful. It's there to test my strength, my brain, and sometimes even my will. All I can say is "Thank God" for the May to October 10 PM limitation. The Valley is simply too crowded during those months to allow camp fires all night. I've been there in the summer many times, and even with the 10 PM restriction, the Valley holds in all of that smoke. Needless to say, it makes for less than an inspiring night. Especially, if you are getting ready for the Half Domby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
Does anyone know when the scheduled date is this year to take down the Half Dome Cables. Is it always BY October 15th, or is it dependent on weather conditions? Thanks!by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
<HTML>Okay, I know what you mean. I try to get there from the midwest 3-4 times per year. I'd go every week if I could. Have you ever done the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mount Whitney? I'd like to do it someday, but being 211 miles one way, I think I would need around 3 weeks (and maybe 4) to really enjoy it. Right now I don't have that block of time. <HTML>Do you get there often? How do you keep up on what's going on in Yosemite? Thanks.</HTML>by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
<HTML>Hi Rick, Do you mind if I ask if you are a Park Ranger, or live in or near the Valley? You always seem to have the answers for virtually any question. I'm sure all the visitors here appreciate your insight(s). Thanks,</HTML>by wbmyosemite - General Discussion
<HTML>Hi again Jim, I have posted a link below from the 1998 Backpacker magazine titled "Where Windshield Tourists Fear to Tread." Not only is it a nice article, but it details some hikes similar to the ones you have mentioned. I've never done any of them, but I plan to this summer with my wife. After I read this about Mt. Hoffman and what Muir said about the view, I can't wby wbmyosemite - General Discussion
<HTML>Hi Jim, A nice day hike is from the Lukens Lake Trailhead (up on Tioga Road) to the top of Yosemite Falls. It is "relatively" flat compared to walking up to the Falls from the valley floor. You are walking down TO the falls and back UP to your car, but the trail does not have the steepness of the hike up to the Falls. It's longer, but really an easy day hike.
