laugh if you want, but I am concerned about this Thursday 3/22/2012. every 188 days there is planetary alignment that has triggered big quakes. Indonesia + 188 = NZ + 188 = Fukishima + 188 = Fiji + 188 = Thursday and two shotsby rroland - General Discussion

Quotechick-on If you look like that you should be able to fly! Seriously though. You are sorta on right track. Exped Mat is nice (I have the short one).. but I wouldn't buy that at the start. Go with a inflatable and then sleep right on your closed cell that you have on monster pack. Inside the closed cell roll there is a thermarest inflatable, pretty comfy Quotechick-on My advice. first step: get a lighter, warmer bag for the winter second step: get a down parka third step: get a bivey sackby rroland - General Discussion
Quotebalzaccom OK--so I fish, but I NEVER take a tackle box. A nylon bag with reel, leader and a few flies is all I take. And I don't take three changes of anything, either. One extra pair of undies and socks, and I wash them if I need cleaner ones. Cookset? We take one pot, period. And I'll bet my fleece weights a lot less than your sweater.... Quotemrcondron Quoterroland I'm looking for a site or a semi-responsible entity to coach me on how to get UL for my winter-time attempts... what do ya think about this one? ultralight backpacking link One key thing is to be very experienced in non-UL backpacking and work your way into UL. QuoteSoCalCPA Every fish I caught was released - That is pretty much how I fish - Occassionally, I may keep one or two to cook up but I didn't have the seasonings (butter/lemon/garlic) to make it worth the meal - Besides fish in the higher level lakes are usually too small and are there for the fight and admiration (at least for me) Did you use barbless hooks? QuoteNacciNW We did the same thing a few years ago. Are the marmots still there? We had to keep one hand on the bear canisters when opened or those pesky critters would just reach right in! And the walk to the saddle and hike on up was on our agenda as well. (The saddle was far enough and high enough for me.) Any fish? Yup I did it. Hiked in to Young's solo Thurs. Friday off trail to Roosevelt Lake. A good suggestion (thanks Chick-on). Basically hike North 1.5 mi. Even with clear landmarks I am glad I had the compass. Skirting tree-falls, sketchy boulders I got dis-oriented a couple of times, I checked the compass and got back in the right direction. Didn't see: bears, snakes or lions. Did see: deer, 16by rroland - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteAlmostThere Quoterroland Hey everyone...Do you think it's safer to go off trail with snow cover or not..the reason I ask is I took a Map/Compass class at REI and the instructor taught us an acronym 'S.C.O.P.E' Did they teach you how to use the clinometer on the compass? Might be safe, might be avalanche territory. you mean this? no just a silva compassby rroland - General Discussion
