QuoteDave I often hike alone - for days at a time. I stay on the trail though. I have a quality map of the trail that I have reviewed before hand. (A map printed on a handkerchief does not count.) I never go off trail alone. I've never been lost in the thousands of miles I've hiked in my lifetime. It's not hiking alone that is bad; it is hiking alone UNPREPARED that is bad. ...I stirred it up pretty good... Seriously, I am going up next week solo, don't have a permit, gonna get up there early Thurs. am... Q: what recommedations do you all have for my first off-trail trip? As I said I have not nailed down my permit yet so I'm pretty open, would rather not do a TH in the valley... any help and guidance would be appreciated for this first-time, off-trailer.by rroland - General Discussion
Hey everyone...Do you think it's safer to go off trail with snow cover or not..the reason I ask is I took a Map/Compass class at REI and the instructor taught us an acronym 'S.C.O.P.E' Size Color Orientation Position Elevation seems to me that in snowy condtions I can forget about 'S' & 'C'...it's just I see Chick-on's family going up off trail in the winter, so I know it'sby rroland - General Discussion

This is the existing fire ring at our site on a bluff above Tenaya (not sure what it's called) This is a fire ring we found right at the edge of the canyon, really bad, I big gust of wind and there would be embers tumbling down the canyon (we took this one apart) and no they didn't put it out proper. and just a nice view from the same bluff... Quotevdrummer In July 2005, rangers at the T Meadows Permit Center had no problem giving me a permit to enter Murphy Creek and exit Happy Isles. The route, which I showed them before they gave me the permit, went through Glen Aulin, crossed the Tioga Road near Pothole Dome, and continued past Cathedral Lakes and Clouds Rest. Last week there were some posts about fire rings, incl. a map someone posted showing locations of known fire rings. As a volunteer firefighter I can tell you, the coals are never out when you think they are. Just because that fire went out overnight doesn't mean diddly. Do not leave that site until you douse it, and shovel a good amount of dirt on it. Also the reason for using only exby rroland - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteFrank Furter A couple things to think about: 1. One approach to fluid management is to reduce walking speed to the point that sweating is minimal. This is an important skill during winter as the wet clothing becomes an significant cause of hypothermia when exercise stops. 2.
