It takes about 12 hours for the water from the high country to make down to the Valley. Check late tomorrow morning. If it rained on the snow it could get pretty high.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
When the rain stops I'm thinking of driving up the Merced Canyon just to see what it looks like. I'll post some pictures.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
From that announcement: Rainfall during this storm will raise water levels in the Merced River over 14’, several feet above flood stage at the Pohono River Gauge. That will put water on the road in several places. I'm thinking the river is pretty close to road level around the Cookie Crumble.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wasn't the last big flood because warm rain fell on a large snow pack? It would depend on how warm this rain is and how high the snow level is. With the amount of rain coming in a short time, there could well be some minor flooding. Closing the Valley is probably a good idea. I heard they are scraping ice off the road, but it's not just snow or ice on the road, Tioga has avalanche zones that Sonora does not. "Within Yosemite National Park, it is prohibited to possess or use pepper spray (including bear spray and other irritant gas devices)...." That's from the official Park site. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just passing along the info.by Dave - General Discussion
Yes, you should be informed before you leap in. Some here just like to attack the Park Service and complain about any thing they can dream up. I personally know some of the people and operations being unfairly attacked. I know the attacks are unwarranted. Is everyone that works for the Park Service a saint? No freeking way.
