Around here we have pine sawyer beetles, Ergates spiculatus. The adults lay their eggs in crevices in dead or dying pines. The larva tend to drill/eat their way though the tree horizontally. This weakens the tree and it falls. It's natures way of making room for the new trees to grow.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
CLOVIS, Calif., December 14, 2015 – Following four years of drought, forests throughout the Southern Sierras are experiencing a tree mortality event at a scale unprecedented in recorded history. Locals and visitors to the Sierra National Forest (SNF) are well aware of this event, as dead trees are visible in staggering numbers throughout the landscape. Beyond the direct effects of the droughtby Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
For the 4th grader to get the free entrance pass to the park they MUST go to the website first, take a little test, and then print out a certificate to take to the entrance station. You cannot get the free pass to the parks unless you have that printout.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I already mailed my suggestion that horses, very destructive to trails and vegetation, be banned and llamas used instead. Don't worry, they'll never do that.by Dave - General Discussion
I got the robocall on Monday that they will be coming to look at my trees in December.by Dave - General Discussion
In Mariposa there is at least one business that all they do is trim trees near powerlines for PG&E. They can be seen all year round. They check the lines that cross my property at least once a year. PG&E seems to be trying.by Dave - General Discussion
That's why on the various trail repair projects I've participated in I transplanted poison oak where we just repaired where some uncaring hikers cut the switchbacks. Signs just encourage them.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

It's not about justice, it's about revenge. I see you have to misrepresent my logic in order to justify your beliefs. I'll not bother with a debate since you need to do stuff like that.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Is this "accountability" worth millions of dollars? Would it bring back any trees? Revenge, blame, calling names, and such, are worthless concepts. They accomplish nothing and detract people from doing something constructive. I'd rather spend the money on repairing the forest than on a protracted trial that cannot be won.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I hear Tiera del Fuego is nice. I'd just want to go where there aren't many other tourists. Mt. Hua Shan in China looks interesting.by Dave - General Discussion
It takes all kinds and some of them think 140 dead is something to make jokes about. I'd go to Nepal or Tibet, or back to Antarctica. The good thing about Antarctica is that there are no trails and few tourists.by Dave - General Discussion

Where have I said that anyone starting a wild fire should get off without some kind of punishment? He's had two years of chances to start another fire. The guy is not an arsonist. The fire was accidental, careless, not purposeful. Nowhere did I say he would NOT start another fire. I said HOPEFULLY he learned a lesson.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Evidence of his learning a lesson? How many fires has he started since then? In this case the judge was unable to look at anything since the investigators botched the case. Hopefully they learned a lesson too.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

They'd have to convict him first. The prosecutor dropped the case since it would cost more than it was worth, that, and they failed to present a good case against him.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nobody is expecting anyone to set fires. Persecuting this person will not rebuild any homes or help any firefighter. It would actually take money away from those endeavors. So, again, why waste money in the courts?by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Why waste the money? Persecuting this guy, spending millions on trial after trial, then fining him millions of dollars he cannot pay. For what? The satifaction of pointing a finger?by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteforrestrangersorry.... but who ever came up with this idea to do this should be shot! the whole park is congested now. I know it won't be a popular solution, but take the bus. Without that bus lane the valley would still be congested and the busses would get nowhere.
