Quotechick-on Here's a photo I took on April 8th. The infamous Olmsted Pt. slide area is show along with Tenaya Lake. I think I'm gonna be right about May 5th. (and I'm glad I was the first to give that date) (Isn't science awesome?) With it being in the mid-80s in Texas right now, man does that ever look good.by mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuoteJayabrams I have reserved "Meals Only" at the Sunrise HSC for that night and the next morning. Are the meals out there really outstanding? Seems really expensive at $46 for a dinner and breakfast. What kind of menu is typical at the High Sierra Camps?by mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteitchbay I believe that's what it says on the Recreation.gov site, meaning they're not even taking reservations for dates earlier than that. I wouldn't be surprised if it opened earlier, but I'm not going to bank on it. I'm still going to hope for getting one of the FCFS sites in TM, but I'm also making alternative plans. Quotey_p_w Quoteparklover I have never heard of Housekeeping or any other DNC lodging reservations being scalped. They are being resold, and it is pretty much legal to do so. There are tour companies that book entire blocks of rooms to resell. The room is part of it, along with logistics support, tour guides, planned meals, etc. The amount they make on the rooms probably isn't much, but Iby mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I don't have much of a problem with people scalping DNC reservations; DNC is already squeezing every last cent they can out of people anyways with their $500 a night at the Ahwahnee and minimum wage workforce. What bugs the hell out of me and causes me to start flagging is when I see vultures who contribute nothing whatsoever to the park jumping on the public permits and upscaling the price to whby mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotehotrod4x5 Quotembear What does a pizza even go for in Curry? Do you get really gouged on the price, or is it something close to within reason relative to non-DNC society?IIRC it's about 12.99 for a one topping large. Not bad; thanks.by mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotebasilbop Also, imho, Shadow isn't that special (and I think camping is not allowed around it anyway)--instead, I'd target Garnett, Nydiver, or Ediza--all of which are within an easy-ish day of Devils Postpile, or at least the shuttle stop at Agnew Meadow. Are you resupplying at Devils Postpile? You can mail yourself a package or leave it at the Reds Meadow pack station. QuoteKatyAndersoby mbear - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteLisaT I'd definitely recommend doing Catherine Lake as a dayhike from Thousand Island, rather than taking a full pack up to Catherine and expecting to find a spot. You can camp on the northwestern end of Thousand Island, away from all the people. QuoteAlmostThere Pay attention to camping restrictions along this route, because when they impose those it means that area gets hammered with a capital HAM by people, which also means the bears will wake you up at night. Quotettilley One other thought towards the latter end of the trip...Tuolumne Meadows to Nelson Lake (instead of Sunrise) is far less crowded, and the cross-country from Nelson to Merced is very nice, and none of it involves any climbing. Quoteriverkat I have never really gotten a permit for a complex multiday trip from YNP rangers...we have always started outside the park and walked in for those. Quoteapeman45 I agree with Basilbop. Shadow is nothing special at all and Rosalie and Gladys are not worth the climb from shadow. If I had to choose one it would be Rosalie as Gladys is a bug infested forested sight and the JMT to Devils postpile is a rather viewless trudge. You will have lots of company. Quotebasilbop QuoteBearproof Awesome trip plan! My only comment is that Lake Catherine is rather inhospitable...lots of medium to large talus all the way down to the "shore". I'll concur with the grim appraisal of Lake Catherine's camping: It's mostly rock/talus/snow bound, depending on the time of the season.
