I think it would be cool to bring back scalping - not the campsite stuff, but the real deal. Catch some dude screwing with the reservations, whip out your bowie knife. Like you say, it's a scarce resource. Off with his rogaine! The problem goes away immediately and completely! A top-notch solution. I use some older BD flicklocks which have served me well. I've been hearing some good things about these: http://www.rei.com/product/813390/black-diamond-distance-z-pole-trekking-poles-pair They meet and exceed your specifications. Depends how you define "difficult." Class two is often a choss swamp, class three is usually more solid. I'd take the latter in a heartbeat. You understand we're playing downhilll, of course - we're going for distance.by QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

According to today's Daily Report, the Tuolumne Meadows Service Station is open and accepting credit cards, so the phones to TM & its Wilderness Center should be up and running now. That means you should be able to obtain your permit at any of the the other WC's. They will phone TM to confirm space is available. There is another nice set of campsites towards the left of the map above, where the trail crosses the second fork of Eagle Creek, on a bluff, easy to spot from the trail. You might wish to consider a quick jog over to the top of El Cap before you head down in the morning. If you did all the heavy lifting to get up there, it's just a coast, and pretty darn spectacular. The trail does go up - it sort of has to - but it's not that steep and not very long. It follows the tree-lined gully in this picture: Some more shots here but none of the trail itself, it's fairly unremarkable: http://www.qitnl.com/v/092411/ If pack weight is a problem, you could just make two trips, it takes about 15 minutes to get down. This was the first time I hiked with the Chick-on, he told me he was going up there. It just kinda worked out that we hiked together.
