Quoteags I did have many vehicles with one passenger and 4+ seats just keep passing by. I had one SUV with a (foreign (non-US)) family screech the brakes to turn around and offer a ride. American tourists, so paranoid. I've had better luck with foreigners, German and Italian so far. Climbers or hikers are more likely to stop, or even off-duty rangers. Quotechick-on There's no camping signs all around Merced Lake... both the east side and the west side... ??? So, confoozed about the nice camping on west side of Merced Lake. Huh. Well, it wasn't me. I'd try to skip the whole Vogelsang area. Haven't tried this, but looking at the map, and from what I've seen from the trail, it looks easy to cross the Cathedral Range between Parsons and Simmons Peaks, or through Hell Hole. Or at least by going over Parsons towards Vogelsang Pass. With that, it looks like you could also traverse Vogelsang Peak down to Fletcher Creek. QuoteAlex L I of course won't be going anywhere high if the weather forecast suggests a thunderstorm. I am imagining a situation where the forecast is a chance of light rain for the afternoon. I don't see a difference. It's not like on the flatlands, where you have a light rain come through but never hear thunder. In the mountains I feel that if you have enough moisture in the air for rain, theby Sierra Miguel - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

QuoteSteveHall So looking at those charts, on a normal year like 2011, the flow might have been too high to cross in mid-June? Whereas, in this year, it is probably safe to cross even right now? I have a hard time figuring out which level is the danger zone in looking at those charts. The only time I went past Wapama was the afternoon of May 28, 2012, and it was tame then, and that's about whby Sierra Miguel - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteSteveHall That last section of the hike has the waterfalls which swept some hikers to their death a few years back. So I want to make sure that the very end is safe to get across and I wouldn't get stuck backtracking for endless miles. Here's the latest Falls Creek flow. Just like Vegas. All the world's wonders come to you. If we bring back the Ahwahnechee, they could open a casino. QuoteArchie What maps do you folk use? I use Tom Harrison (printed) maps. The National Geographic maps seem better. I use the USGS maps if I'm going off trail. (I don't go off trail solo.) Another option, probably even easier if the schedules work out, is to take the train to Lancaster, then take the bus up the east side of the Sierras. Lots of options on the east side. Most require hitching to the trailhead, but in Mammoth Lakes and June Lake, the trailhead is right there. QuoteArchie My flight from the UK gets me into LA so the Sequoia national park seemed like a fair bet as I will be relying on public transport. Ugh.
