Thanks for the report, I'm looking forward to being in that area in a few weeks. Loved the photos!by hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have a few photos of the Clark Range from the Panorama trail, no zooms though. I'll be going there this September. Not sure the snow will be all melted by then. A shot from the Vernal Falls railing. Water was flowing swiftly a good 5' inside the railing, so I wasn't able to get as close as in years past. I didn't feel like being one of those people that don't have a healby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I spent a week in the valley last week, and another chance to hike to Sierra Point. The route was in similar as it has been the past few years. The main difference was the amount of water you could see from there. The view was so amazing, that two 13 year olds with us were actually impressed (that didn't stop them from complaining about the steep hike it took to get there though ). Here is Illby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Amazing. I'm heading up there in early September. I'm sure there will be still plenty of snow to go around. Seems like a theme for this yearby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I proposed at the top of Upper Yosemite Falls 3 years ago next week. I think there were 2 other people there, but I waited til they left the railing viewing area. I was more nervous of dropping the ring over the falls than her saying yes. Luckily, both worked out in my favor. On the way back down, we met a lady that told us about Oh My Gosh Point, and got to see that jewel of an area. 6 monby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the info. We are going over Labor Day. I'm sure there will still be plenty of snow at elevation, so we are planning accordingly. I have heard about the goldens in that area. I've already made room for my fly rod in my pack. I'm sure there will be many more questions as I get closer to the trip.by hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I secured a permit for Mono Meadow, and was thinking about doing this trip. Then, I saw your trip report, and it cemented the idea. Do you have any advice not already mentioned above for this trip? I'm especially interested in types of food that may be palatable at elevation. This will be the first extended high elevation backpacking for us (it's been mostly long day hikes in the past sleepiby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I've wanted to walk out there every time I go, but for some reason, I always drive in when it's dark. I'll make it a point to make a trip out there. Thanks for the shot!by hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the information. I think most boots would require a certain amount of customization to get the right fit. I've been dealing with foot and ankle issues for the past year, and am getting them resolved, so I'm motivated to do my research and put in the time to find the best one for my needs. I think it's a matter of visiting various stores and trying on many different sizes, styles, anby hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi everyone, I am looking to replace my hiking boots, and wanted to find a place or places in the greater Bay Area that has people who know what they are talking about and has a decent selection. I had an old pair of Montrail's that lasted for years, and I could wear for mile after mile without any discomfort. Sadly, they have been discontinued. I got them at the REI in Berkeley 15 or so yearsby hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've been thinking about upgrading our sleeping pads since my wife and I are transitioning from day hiking in Yosemite to backpacking. My old 20 year old Thermarest just isn't quite cutting it. I blame the old mattress, not the old bones that sleep on it . How is the Neo-Air for side sleepers?by hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for all the input everyone. We were planning on heading down the JMT. Way more forgiving on the knees!by hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi all, I have a family trip planned later in June to the Valley and are planning on hiking to North Dome from Tioga Rd as well as hiking the Four-Mile Trail to Glacier Point then taking the Panorama Trail back to the Valley floor. I'm wondering if there are any good side trips/views we should be aware of along those trails? I was fortunate enough to find out about Sierra Point from this forumby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the info! Very helpful. We have our Yak Trax packed already. Have a great New Year's everyone!by hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was wondering if anyone knew if the loop trail around Mirror Lake is opened? I've done it once after the slide a number of years ago, then wen back 2 years ago and saw it was closed. I'm planning on being there over New Year's, and was looking for a nice simple hike in the cold crisp conditions. Any other nice Valley winter trails (marked or not) would be very much welcomed!by hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I had no issue getting a site for a few days the last weekend in April into May. Hoping for the same luck in June. Not holding by breath though...by hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
After hiking the JMT down from Nevada Falls a few weekends back, I was noticing how much asphalt is on that trail. I've noticed it over the years, but never really thought about it. The very wet hike back down had me thinking about the logistics of getting the paving material that far up a trail. I have noticed this on portions of other trails as well. My guess is that back in the 40's, sectiby hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Justin-T, we made it to the cables about 12 and took a break to reapply sunscreen & hydrate. We probably had about 40 people hiking up the cables with us. It was close to 90 degrees during the hike. We each drank about 9 liters of water. I'm glad I brought my water filter, otherwise we would have been begging for water from other hikers. I just got back from an 8-day camping trip in Yosemite Valley with my wife and various other friends & family. This would be the first trip back to Yosemite for my wife and me since our honeymoon there last November. Sadly, my annual pass ran out in April, so I forked over $60 for a new one (still a bargain). The first hike of the trip consisted of many of the adults and children hiking paby hulkman75 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I just did this hike with my wife and a friend using these photos to get us there. They worked like a charm! We only saw 5 people on their way back, otherwise, we had the place to ourselves. It was really cool seeing people on the JMT below us not knowing we were a few hundred feet above them and all alone. Illilouette Falls was more of a trickle, but we were able to see all 4 falls. Thanks for all of the input. I can never seem to keep pizza around long enough for leftovers the next day. I'll try some of the other suggestions. The Chef Boyardee may take a leap of faith, but I'll try anything once.by hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hello all, I am planing a week long vacation to Yosemite with my wife and other family, and am planning on doing a few long day hikes in and around Yosemite Valley (Cloud's Rest, Panorama Trail via 4-Mile trail, North Dome, Etc.) in June. Over the past many years of hiking, my lunches have consisted of Gallo salami and Ritz crackers almost exclusively. That has served me well, but I thought Iby hulkman75 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
