Another thing is that people can't figure out is where to put their chains on. They just stop in the middle of the road. Drive's me nuts! This was terrible during the holidays. So be on the lookout around corners if chains are required. It is really nice during the winter to have some places all to yourself, especially if you've been to the same place during the busy summer months.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

As weather progresses, I get the feeling that if I do the loop to Tenaya lake then back and around through Snow Creek trail that I will have a hard time with Olmstead Point unless I would like to ride a pile of snow down. Any one know an approximate time to go up and around Via the old Tioga rd (I think) towards the May Lake TH then back down Snow creek to avoid the avalanche danger? Your sleeping bag should be plenty warm, make sure you have a good ground pad and some nice dry clothes to change into. I usually carry a bear canister even in winter. It makes it easier to snack during the night i would carry some kind of microspikes for extra traction. When we did mirror lake a couple weeks ago, there were some icy spots that could have ended badly if I wasn't paying attentioby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I would say that is a beaver, I don't think otters have the teeth structure to chew wood in that way. They have more dog-like teeth. Pretty awesome either way, I would love to see both!by VengeanceASX - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Technically hiking the 6-8th, but going in on the 5th. A buddy and I are planning on conquering Cloud's Rest in a few week and am looking for advice on a "base camp" for Cloud's Rest. We've never been to the top of Cloud's Rest, but it seems pretty awesome! I'm looking for tips, pointers, anything really on the route. We are both pretty advanced in the winter backpacking realm and thby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Wow, that is a beautiful shot of your tent! Thanks for the report. I will also be heading out in the beginning of February. This makes me all tingly inside!by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Sounds like a good plan. I am on my phone and can't check you're route, but I would say the best time would be late July early August if our snows keep up. In 2011, I did a similar route and all the creek crossing were raging in the 2nd week of July and the trail past Glenn Aulin to Waterwheel Falls was all flooded. If our snows keep up, it may be a similar situation this summer.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This was a topic that came up today when I was speaking with the Ranger on the phone. I am not planning on a fire, nor would I ever build one outside of a camp with established fire ring if I was. I really did laugh out loud when basilbop said, "If you are willing to move that much snow to stay warm, build an igloo instead--it will be much more effective." Ha, still makes me laugh, I amby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Just like the topic says. A buddy and I are thinking of tackling Cloud's Rest in a few weeks and I am curious who still builds a fire when backpacking. With the drought and fire restrictions and not having much time when backpacking to keep a fire going, I have learned to get along without them, but they are nice sometimes. I don't think I have build one since last year around this time on a 4 dby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I am running the MSR lightning ascents in 25". I am 200 lbs and I carry a 30-40 lb pack (tails help here). I don't float, but it is a heck of a lot better than post holing. I also don't break the trail all the time either, and they have excellent traction on the crunchy stuff. My buddy just bought some Yukon Charlies pretty cheap and he hasn't had a problem.
