Thanks. I was a bit confused initially at the Google definition. It referred to logging or cattle camps. The FCC makes sense.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks! Going early October. Don't know what a Spike Camp is. Guess I will Google it. 😁😁😁by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thinking about doing the above trail. My first time on this trail. Is it worth doing this late in the year, or should I wait until next season with more water? Thank you, Jonby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm too paranoid to leave anything charging, though I too see things charging regularly. I inquired about outlets because I like to have coffee with my breakfast, and i get up before Degnan's or the cafateria open...also I'm picky about my coffee and like to grind right before brewing.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I've always preferred sleeping w/o a tent, but my wife "needs" one. Now that she doesn't go with me anymore (bad knees) I'm going tentless most of the time. Got caught w/ mosquitoes one night but it wasn't as big a problem as I'd anticipated. Just put on some DEET. Mosquitoes aren't out all night, just in the evening. Thanks AT. Yes it is permitted, just wasnt sure whether there were conditions, as there are in YV.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Great! Thanks chick-on. Yes, I would want to have a PFD in the lake even if not required.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Are there conditions to being allowed to kayak in Tenaya Lake? For instance, in the Valley the sum of air and water temperature must be at least 100 degrees. Does that apply to Tenaya Lk as well?by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for posting this question. It got me to thinking about how nice it would be to kayak down the Merced. Getting a kayak is an idea I've played with over the years; but this time I finally went and got one. This will give me an option on days that I'm recovering from a long hike. The only bummer is that one of the conditions is that the sum of water and air temp be at least 100 degreesby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
As long as you are thinking T.M., consider Glen Aulin. You are along water a good bit of the way and (you mentioned kids) is an easier hike. In fact you wouldnt need to go all the way to G.A. if it were too far for the wee ones...the whole trail is worthwhile (meaning that you coild stop anywhere and have had a great hike.)by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Chick-on: I swear, you amaze me with your ability to pull up pictures from seemingly any spot mentioned. Not only that you've taken them, but that you have them catalogued well enough to find them.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks, yeah, that's what I figured. There's a really neat basin (cirque whatever, not really sure of the proper name) just shy of the pass that has incredible views down into the canyon. But from your picture of the pass, I'm sure that you know that already. In fAct, I'd bet that you have a picture of it, too. Oh, and I really like your second picture...but isn't it backwards? A friend has asked me to take him backpacking, and I was thinking of a quick, easy trip to Donohue Pass and back. Just wondering how much snow is likely to be there the 3rd week of June. I went over the pass on the 1rst week of July 5 years ago when hiking the JMT and it was fine. So it seems likely that it will be OK this year with our lighter than average precipiation; but just wanted to thrby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Ha! I knew that comment would get a response. Of course, everything in Yosemite has been photographed to death. I was just stunned, though when I came upon it, since I hadn't seen it before. I have the same edition as you, David.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Illilouette Fall and Half Dome from the Panorama Trail Yosemite Falls from, I think Taft Point, along the Pohono Trail Snow Plant. Signs of spring (along with mosquitos in the Valley - few up here though) The Mist Trail becomes the Rainbow Trail "The Captain" from Dewey Point. Incredible. Too bad pictures can't do it justice. Subject line says it all. I no longer have access to my old email address, the address that I have registered for this forum. I tried to update, but it requires me to give my old email address and confirm the change through it. But again, I can't because I don't have access to it. I just got back from an overnighter and have 2 or 3 images I'd like to share of the Pohono Trail but not sure how to post pictures? I no longer have a website to upload my images too. I have uploaded them to Google Plus. Is there a way to create a link to them? Jonby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks chick-on. Your advice was spot-on, no surprise. And thanks to all for your input. I must admit that I was startled at the number of spectacular vistas. I've been visiting Yosemite for going on 5 decades and have hiked many of its trails numerous times. I've also seen many images of Yosemite, and rarely (relatively speaking) have I seen images taken from the Pohono Trail. I took this toby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
