You should have gallons of gasoline in the cars tank. I would think you would have 5 gallons or so. How much white gas do you plan to add? Even a gallon of white gas added to 5 gallons of gasoline should be fine. You could probably run several gallons of just white gas in a car without hurting it.by Hitech - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I am not the least bit afraid of black bears. But I just can't imagine not screaming "like a little girl" if I were bluff charged and didn't have bear spray handy (I never carry it, BTW). And I can't imagine it getting easier! You da man!by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteplawrence Wouldn't bear spray also be effective if one was attacked by a mountain lion? Possibly, but since encounters are so rare there isn't much evidence. Mountain lions don't charge like bears do, so effective use of the spray is different. There is a story of a biologist that was tagging mountain lions successfully using bear spray to stop a mountain lion. Since the encounteby Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

BTW, bear spray is WAY more effective that a gun: http://www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/species/mammals/grizzly/bear%20spray.pdf Don't carry a gun to protect yourself from a brown bear, it's likely you get you hurt. I've never liked the term "Leave no trace" since you almost always leave a trace. The idea of minimizing your impact is what everyone in Yosemite should be striving for. That said, I dismantle these things too and not just in Yosemite. They are not part of a wilderness experience. I haven't read the fine print on what is required by the wilderness act, but these may violate it.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

For food, if you like food with seasoning try Packit Gourmet. They made my wife's first backpacking trip very memorable. She is picky about food and loved theirs. We tried several at home first and then ordered from them without worry. As for pack weight, anything over 30 lbs is too much. Being closer to 20 or under would be better. But, as always, it depends.
