Yes, I know, I've done the loop before. On Tuesday morning, I'll be leaving Vogelsang headed for Merced Lake. Thunderstorms are predicted that morning. But if it looks bad I'll take Fletcher Creek instead of Vogelsang Pass. It's more protected, less exposed.by Mom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I called them and yes, they say they are strict on the cancellation policy. Thunderstorms are predicted for early next week. If lightning bolts are raining down from the sky when I am set to leave Tuolumne Meadows, I'll either wait or turn around and argue with them later. I have encountered Ranger Dave, ha. I have reserved 4 nights in the High Sierra Camps starting Monday next week, July 20. I'm going to Vogelsang, Merced Lake and Sunrise. I am concerned that the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms with lightning. I've done these hikes before so I know that there are many exposed areas that I simply don't want to be during a lightning storm. I'm thinking of taking some dayhikes in the Tuolumne area next week. I've tried to get through to the Wilderness desk in Yosemite with no luck. So, how are the trails now with all the recent snowfall? I'd imagine Lyell is pretty muddy. Is the trail to Glen Aulin under water? Are the lakes still iced over? Any ice or snow still on the trails? The wool blankets are fine. They pile up several on each cot. But bring a lightweight liner to sleep in. They want to save laundry.by Mom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The blankets are fine, more than fine. The tents at Sunrise HSC have wood burning stoves. The one night I stayed there, one of my tent mates kept the stove burning all night long, you could have grown orchids in there it was so hot. Merced Lake doesn't have the wood stoves. Being at lower elevation it's not as cold.by Mom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Shaunsmomo: You sound a lot like me. So I think my experience would give some insight. Last summer, my daughter, 20, and I, 50-something, did our first backpacking trip from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne. I am not an experienced backpacker. My one and only backpacking trip was when I was in my twenties and I said "never again!". But over the course of years, I did day hikes in Tuolby Mom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I don't see how adding another building in the form of a new visitor's center is an improvement. And allowing whitewater trips on the Tuolumne River! Seems like asking for trouble.by Mom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

We were hiking north on the JMT this August just a mile or so below Donohue Pass. It was around noon. Met a guy who stopped us and asked whether we thought he'd make it to Red's Meadow by 7pm. He was supposed to meet friends there. He didn't have a map (and apparently hadn't looked at one before making his plans).by Mom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

If you drive up and park on the Tioga Road, how are they going to know whether you came up before or after the shutdown?. There are likely cars parked there for backpackers who have been in the backcountry since before this shutdown and have no idea what's going on in Washington. Two weeks ago on the JMT, I used the Potable Aqua iodine with the neutralizer and thought the water tasted fine. Maybe a bit soapy. But better than I had expected. Very light weight. I also carried what I called my 'dip and drink', an AquaMira bottle with a built in filter-straw system. I just came off the JMT on Friday. We did a short segment, Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne via Shadow Lake. It's tough, like being on a Stairmaster for 4 days. But we met some amazing people hiking. One man was 70 and was doing 25 miles a day. It was his 7th trip on the JMT. We did meet a lot of people headed south as we were headed north. I heard that DNC is reluctant to make any improvements to the Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp, namely putting in composting toilets, until they know whether or not they will have to remove some of the tent cabins to comply with the Tuolumne River Plan. I'd forgotten I'd posted questions last year about going to Waterwheel. Last year, I couldn't beg my way into two nights at GA for our party of four. We didn't get to Waterwheel or LeConte.
