Okay - I'm a little late here. In July 2017 I did a loop out of Dana Meadows, exiting at Parker Pass, over Koip Peak Pass, dropping down to Gem Lake and Waugh Lake before joining up with the PCT and heading back into Yosemite via Donohue Pass and following the Lyell Canyon into Tuolumne. The following is a rough line-point of our route. Route. On Day one we made our way from the trailhby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Not all the hammocks on the market force a true cantaloupe shaped sleep. I have a Hennessy Hammock that is asymmetrical allowing one to sleep at more of a diagonal and flatter (not completely flat) position. Without a quilt a light breeze will suck the warmth from the areas compressed against the hammock. A sleeping pad helps, but doesn't eliminate. My Hennessy hammock has a built-in no-see-uby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I did a loop of RPP in May of 2013. It wasn't as heavy a snow year, but you may find some helpful information in responses to questions posed prior to my trip, and in my trip report found here. I don't recall if it was in the linked thread, but I did receive a piece of advice that, although you may already know, is good to remember. So nice of Chick-on! That way you'll be able to make an accurate statement that you have covered every foot of trail. Just make sure you enter the trail where you left after camping/bathroom/water refill when you're around that guy!! ;-) He'll undoubtedly call you out on it. Best of luck! Hope to you see out there one of these times.by Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Really nice photos -- Thank you for sharing them. I agree with the granite shorelines opinion. Very nice. Yea - water sounds too cold for my likings. Maybe a quick plunge then out to warmth. Head no like, I no like.by Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I was always under the impression that you were only required to spend your first night at certain camping spots on particular trails--Young Lakes not being one of them (only restriction is 4 trail miles from Tuolumne, I believe). As for what you've told them your tentative plan is, I think you can always change that when you pick up your permit. My plans, first night included, change 90% of thby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Not the best photos, but may be able to give you a better idea of the area: A couple photos of 'Don't Be a Smart Pass' from Roosevelt's far end looking: Looking back down at Roosevelt from pass: Looking down at Upper McCabe from Pass:by Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I remember the climb from Roosevelt to the pass being quite a bit of work--and needing to take lots of breaks. The descent to Upper McCabe, as I recall, had an area of snow pack, and a steep decline on loose dirt. It wasn't tricky, but it wasn't easy either. The guy I was with said that it was a bit sketchy for him. But it was his first backpacking trip, and first time to Yosemite. I thinkby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'll be doing this same route just a couple days before you - I think our entry date is the 6th of August. I've gone from Young Lake to Roosevelt, then headed over 'don't be a smart pass' between North Peak and Sheep Peak, dropping into McCabe Lakes on a different trip. This time around, I'm going to do the same route to Roosevelt, then circumnavigate around Sheep Peak towards Lower McCabe andby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Eeek reports recent closure of Tioga Pass due to snow--possibly this area got cold enough to freeze those little suckers?by Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I bought a pair of Nikon Prostaff 7 (now onto model 7S ?) for the in-laws, as they safari in Africa just about every year. They love them, and brought them to Yosemite on a recent camping trip. They work really well, and are built well- in my belief particularly well for more rugged application than others may be. Only pair I have ever purchased, though. Does AT&T truly have better coverage, or are there simply more Verizon users using bandwidth which reduces coverage quality? I really don't know anything about this stuff--but in March, when not many people were in the park I had perfect service all the way to the top of Clouds Rest. Then in March, on a weekend where temperatures averaged 80 and the valley was pretty busy, I didn't have anyby Torero14 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I purchased the Nokia 520 off a recommendation with the free navicomputer/navimapper set-up. I love it. The phone is simple to use, has a battery that lasts and recharges quickly, and the GPS is accurate. Doubling as a media phone--with capability to pre-load movies, shows, etc. is just a bonus. I can't comment on the photo-quality because I've never used it. Don't be fooled by the $30. Youby Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Awesome photos and report. Interesting to see that all four of you opt for foam pads. Are these just for lounging/extra insulation? Or are these truly the only pads you bring along?by Torero14 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
