Thanks for the pictures, they are really helpful. The climb up looks like hard work, and the way down looks quite sketchy. Easy stuff, but on my own, with a "day 1" pack, it's probably not worth the risk. It really reminds me of when I scrambled up Gibbs from Summit Lake, and then picked my was down the other side. It was exhausting, and took up lots of time and energy, and the snowfby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This is what I've got so far. http://caltopo.com/m/3247 Really, I would like to shave a day off of that. The first day is annoyingly short, and I wish I was able to push on to Miller Lake really. What does everyone think? Doable? I'm in great shape, move pretty quick, and have no problem hiking for 10 hours. I've done a few 16 hour days before. Thanks for the input guys. The pass at the North End of Roosevelt lake, is that "don't be a smart pass"? Why the name? Sounds ominous! That route looks like quite hard work. The contours are close together, especially on the other side of the pass. I like the idea of going around, to the west and then upto Mcgabe lake. or heading cross country to pickup the PCT. Hi all, nice quick one this... Is it possible to hike cross country from Young Lakes, to the top of Cold Canyon/Virginia Canyon? I've got a Wilderness Permit for the 8th August, to Young Lakes, via Glen Aulin. It's not what I originally wanted, but at this point, I'll pretty much take what I can get, lol. My original plan was to go up Cold Canyon from Glen Aulin, but if a slight detourby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi all, thanks for the input. I will be sure to go past Rogers Lake, and do Volunteer Peak :-) About the final portion, after getting back to Glen Aulin HSC, I have chosen to head South there, but Chick-On, you reccomended going out the Pothole Dome route? Would that be the same route I came in via, on my first day? I'm not a fan of backtracking, or covering ground I have already seen, whiby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the input guys. I'm a meticulous planner, sometimes overly so, so I am having fun, tweaking this route. Chick-On, if I have the energy, then a trip up Volunteer, seeing as it comes highly reccomend by yourself, will be on my agenda. So, do you think I should alter my route to take in the slight detour of Rogers Lake, and Neall Lake then? If I climb Volunteer Peak in the morning,by TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
OK, I've revised it. I hope this link works: Map It's just a quick outline, can be tweaked as input dictates. I think this has even, with a couple of long days, shaved a day or two off of what I orriginally intended, which is nice, as time either side of the hike would have been tight otherwise, but I still want to spend time in the Valley chilling out, and maybe a leisurely day in SF again bby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
OK, thanks for the input guys, that's exactly why I come here :-) I'm really liking what you guys are saying, so I am just heading back to my maps.... Steveby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Chick-on, I am indeed inclined, and in good shape. If it is possible to reach Benson Lake in two long days, I will make it. That's great, as it will save me a bit of time. And, by east of Hetchy, I mean, going up the Grand Canyon of The Tuolumne, back to Glen Aulin, so it will be a circular route. I've begun creating a bit of an outline, hopefully theby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you both for your valuable input. And, thank you for the link to the Caltopo site - that is going to be very, very handy! I have begun mapping out my proposed first few days, and looking at mileages. I'm not going to be fishing, would even know where to start lol, and timewise, I would be looking at sometime in July, most likely, but I am willing to take advice on that one. Hi all, Looks like, I might actually be able to get out to Yosemite this year after all! :-) It will be a bit of a last minute trip, or seems like it, as my last one took 18 months to plan. I posted about this sort of trip quite a while back, but a change of job meant that it had to go on hold, as the finances wouldn't allow it. Well, after another change of job next month, the financesby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Calf raises are actually something I will be using this month, when I start working with clients who are being refered to me after knee surgery. As you say, it's good to begin with some support, such as the back of a chair, and progress to a bigger range of motion, as you suggest. For people who are not recovering from surgery, I think that adding resistance into calf work is really important, asby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi all, I read this topic a while back, and thought I would return with my thoughts on hiking fitness / training. This can be a very open topic due to the huge differences in people. Many people have different abilities, are coming from different fitness levels, and have different goals, however, I will offer what I can. I think that base fitness and injury prevention should be high on tby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi all! I don't post here nearly enough, but then, living across the pond in the UK, I don't have a huge amount to contribute. However, I do consider this forum to be a bit of a hiking "home" for me, so I do like to share my trips on the rare occasion that I manage to get out and about. This year, due to changing not just jobs, but taking on a complete career change and trying somby TechieSteve - General Discussion
Hi all! As some of you know, I am trying my best to get back over to you guys for more hiking goodness! Following on from my sucessfull 6 day adventure last year, I am going to try and do 8-10 days this time, and would like to run my very early plans pasty you... (I'm using a combination of my 2 maps, and google Earth to plan) My plans so far are to hike out of the Backpackers camp at Tby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi all, many thanks for your input into this thread, and your advice. As my work circumstances have changed, and I am now not sure where I will be working or living this summer, I have had little time to look into the JMT, so chose to shelve the idea for at least another year. I just simply did not have enough time to plan to the level of detail required. Instead, work all being well, Iby TechieSteve - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hiya guys, long time no speak. I've been busy over this side of the pond with everything except for hiking. It's good to be back, and I am looking forward to seeing what you guys get up with Yosemite in winter. With the new year approaching, I really should start seriously thinking about my 2014 vacation ( <- see, I'm learning the lingo, and everything!) I just watched the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7cRsfW0Jv8 Surely nobody falls for that?! QuoteDave The problem with that is that Obama is not being "intransigent." He is not negotiating with hostage takers. He is not negotiating with terrorists. When you are right, what's there to negotiate about? There are 535 Congresspersons/Senators. Eighty of them hate the President so much they are willing to ruin the country. Reminds me of a time a few years ago, when I was coming down from the Upper Yosmite Falls trail. We were maybe only about 45 miniutes from the bottom. It was hot, and dry. I Had taken plenty of water, but was still close to running out. I passed a school group who were on their way up, and overheard some talking between students, and teachers, saying that some were already out of water. I can't help but wonder what would have happend if that situation had occured while I was over your side of the pond earlier this year? Descending down to Yosemite Valley after 6 days in the wilderness, to find it deserted would probably have scared the crap out of me. Did the world end while I was hiking?! lol Seems like a horrible situation for all concerned. I feel for all the people whoby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow, scary stuff. I'm from England, so all the talk of guns is a bit much for me lol! I don't worry about animals too much, but people worry me more. When I did my first overnight trips in the UK, I did worry slightly about "hooligans" arriving in the night, but I reason that anybody that far out, isn't likely to be a troublemaker. Oh dear, I think today is the tipping point, where I decide I am doing it. I rememebr this from last year... So, JMT, north to south it is. Ambitious, and slightly stupid, but that's where I get my kicks. I have been looking at the Bearikade Expedition, which can aparently do upto 12 days. As the whole trip should fit in 14, that should do the trick. I will be lightening a couple of other bby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yes Chick-on. I think you are right, it was your fault lol I think that if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have attempted something that far out of my comfort zone, but thanks to that trip, I have now been able to redifine what my comfort zone is, and how hard I can push myself. I will start taking a serious look at the route, and rescources over the next few weeks, and weigh it up. Mby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Good, I thought it was just me. It's supposed to be the wilderness, after all, and I don't want evidence of people, if I can avoid it. When I hiked near the 120, after a couple of lonely days at Mono Pass, and Gibbs, I hated it. I am amazed that the trails are so maintained too. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Right guys. Following on from what I feel was a fantastic success on my recent trip, I am starting to almost, sometimes, occasionaly, maybe, daydream about the next one. I have been bad, and started looking at a few details of the JMT So, Whitney, to the Valley (I know that is the reverse to the proper way) Worth it? Achieveable for me? Great pics. They remind me of my time there last month. Love the Mono Lake shot, fantastic. I was a bit gutted to have missed Dana on my recent visit. I was on Gibbs, and wanted to traverse to Dana, but was too tired, and a couple of hours behind schedule. I'll get it one day! What are people's thoughts on trail markers like that?
