I see. Those bean soups were great because you could just add hot water, just like the packaged ones, and keep the pot clean to make tea.by iivvgg - General Discussion
Does anyone have recommendations for quick and nutritious dinners (veg and non-veg) without excessive packaging? Years ago, I switched from packaged meals to these bean soups I could buy in bulk from the grocery store. They really hit the spot, especially with some crackers and a chunk of Parmesan cheese on the side... Well, apparently the store doesn't carry them anymore. I can't justify buyingby iivvgg - General Discussion
No wonder we have a wildfire problem. Yosemite NP only wants to burn less than 1000 acres (less than 2 square miles). Prescribed burns are a vaccine for the land. They have side effects, but they're better than the alternative. We need to suck it up and take our medicine.by iivvgg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Very unfortunate, but should surprise no one on this forum.by iivvgg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There's always the Mt Dana trail, too. Starts just about 100 feet outside the park at Tioga Pass. But it's not for the faint of heart!by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Heh. Tom, the bear would need to get the backpack from the hiker first.by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I should ask the obvious question. Why don't you just reserve a spot? It shouldn't be too hard at the less-popular campgrounds.by iivvgg - General Discussion
My cousin wants to go to the Lost Coast. I wanted to point him to a long writeup that I made on this site in 2018, but I can't find it! Did old posts get deleted?by iivvgg - General Discussion
Thursday isn't so good, because some people start their weekends early. Wednesday would be OK, except all the people trying to beat the Thursday people.by iivvgg - General Discussion
Thanks for posting. I'm pretty frustrated that they say that they re-evaluate daily, but don't tell us what they decide.by iivvgg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Does anyone know if the closure has been extended? All I know is below: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/inyo/alerts-notices/?aid=61545by iivvgg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I would expect the Creek Fire and the fires within the park to still be active then, although spreading more slowly and generating less smoke. But we never know when the next big fire will break out, so the situation could get bad again. I would not necessarily advise trying to climb Half Dome. The views will be suboptimal (monitor the webcams), and the heavy exertion may be hazardous to your heaby iivvgg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Sounds like a good plan. Good luck!by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Welcome to Yosemite! Make sure to spend plenty of time looking back as you go up from Dog Lake. There's a long meadow stretch with spectacular views back to the south. You should clearly see Mt Lyell. The trail from Middle to Upper Young is quite "unofficial", but I didn't have trouble following it. Time permitting, you may be tempted to continue farther. One of these days, I'd liby iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If normal trailhead quotas are full, I wouldn't recommend the HSCs. Too crowded.by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have a permit for Parker Pass this August. Considering the elevation, I want two nights to acclimate, which means that I need a proper campsite and can't rely on the backpackers' camps. I've been to White Wolf and Tuolumne Meadows, which allow reservations, but I want to know the other options. I'm looking at Tamarack Flat, Yosemite Creek, and Porcupine Flat, as well as the cluster of small natby iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Oh yeah, good idea about 20 Lakes. It's also outside the park. It's a small, enclosed area, but probably rich enough that you could spend two layover days there.by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm afraid that any of FatFlatlander's routes will be too difficult. They all have 6-mile days or longer, at an elevation that your kids haven't experienced before. And that's if you can even get a permit. Finally, Lyell Canyon is way overused. If you want something easier, you can consider the McGurk Meadow trailhead, and camping along the Pohono Trail on top of the valley's south wall. Quick question. Are you aware of the difference between the High Sierra camps (HSCs) and their associated backpackers' camps?by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
The whole story of that trip is here (see day 3). What made us turn around was (a) the slope being steeper than I'd expected and (b) my companion's fear of heights, especially descending exposed rocky slopes. Thanks for the advice, all! I guess my mistake on that trip was "preparing" by doing more research instead of having a backup plan and being flexible. (We did come up with an alby iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
EDIT: I want you to have a good trip and enjoy this beautiful area. But I want you to understand the risks and do it safely. You may be ready yourself, but you need to make sure your family is ready. First, they need to have the endurance to hike the four miles to the pass, or however far it is. (With the elevation, it will feel like six or seven miles.) You can check this by taking them to NCby iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
So I guess you make sure to have a backup plan.by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Say you look at a topo map and find a cross-country route that strikes your fancy. How do you "do your homework" to make sure that it's passable? I've gone cross-country a few times, but once it turned out to be more difficult than I expected and eventually we turned around and went back.by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yes, you must cross the park boundary to camp in that area. Make sure you are ready for the altitude. I suppose you have plenty of experience if you signed up for this adventure?by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteWe've already got our CDF campfire permit, available on-line after you watch a video and take a short quiz. You need one of these permits anytime you are going to have a fire outside your house--including a camp stove on a backpacking trip. #didnotknow!by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm considering returning to Lyell Canyon this year. When I was there before, the best campsites by far seemed to be east across the river, if you could get to them. Didn't see anyone using them, though, except a trail crew. Has anyone forded the river to camp on the east side? Recommendations?by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Did this as a conditioning trip on Monday. Would recommend for anyone looking for a challenge! The trail is unofficial (not shown on most maps). Supposedly 4 miles each way, with 3100 feet of elevation gain. The trailhead is a large turnout just east of the Tioga Pass entrance (outside the park, although most of the trail is in the park). The first mile or so is a level walk through lush, openby iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Anyone here use this? We're going from Cottonwood Lakes to Whitney, and our food won't all fit in the bear can, so we were thinking about supplementing with an Usack for the first night or two. https://www.ursack.com/by iivvgg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
