Yeah, I need to get some. They would have been helpful.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah, I actually don't have a pair of microspikes. Both the guys I were with had theirs, they just never put them on. Mine blew apart last year and I never replaced them. It was a great trip, I just couldn't believe all the people hiking. There were lines on the mist trail almost like spring. I'll be back again in 3 weeks for spring break with the family. Looking forward to some possible laby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Just a follow up from my backpacking trip and summit of Cloud's Rest last weekend. The wilderness center was full and we were the 2nd in line, but already there were only 6 spots left for the Happy isle TH quota and no spots available for staying overnight in LYV. We got lucky the night before and snagged a spot in Camp 4. It was crazy the amount of activity there all night. Met a really niceby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Ahh, I see. Some things are just worth the weight! Two years ago a friend of mine insisted on Rib Eye steaks...so I told him if he wanted them, he could pack them. And he did. One of the best meals I've had while out. After a 12 mile hike in freezing rain, that's not hard to do. Luckily we made it to a campsite with fire rings so we could cook them proper.by VengeanceASX - General Discussion
So if we set up at the CR sunrise lake Trail/JMT junction, will we be able to filter water or melt snow? If not then we'll stay at LYV. Just trying to work out the logistics. I guess we could always see if Sunrise Creek is flowing when we start up towards CR from LYV.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
One more week! Any one know if there is enough snow or other water source between LYV and CR to stay up past the Half Dome/JMT junction? Or should we just stay at LYV?by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am curious to what people are using for their cookware these days. When I first started backpacking, my buddy and I carried an 8 qt stainless steel pot for 13 miles. That was nothing compared to the 2 jars of pizza sauce and premade pizza crusts along with a stick of salami, 3 lbs of bacon and a couple dozen eggs. There was more in there, but that gives you an idea. This was a part of a 3 dby VengeanceASX - General Discussion

That looks like great trip! Definitely leaving the snowshoes next week when I head to Cloud's Rest.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Ok, well I'm guessing no snow shoes then. I'm headed to Yosemite this weekend with the family to do some day hiking and check things out. I appreciate the input from everyone, thanks.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Any opinions out there on whether or not snowshoes will be needed to climb Cloud's Rest in 2 weeks? Long term forecast doesn't show any new major storms in the next few weeks.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah, we'll be hanging our food.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

We won't be in until late Friday night and we'll have to get permits on Saturday. I spoke with a ranger yesterday and she said snow in minimal around LYV. Bear containers are required until 7200 feet. I checked that trail report and I can't believe how little snow there is. We did this same hike about 3 years ago and had to turn around less than a mile from the top of CR due to slush up to ourby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah, it's going to be Firefall Weekend. Might be sleeping in the truck.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah, President's Day weekend. Thinking of camping at the HD/JMT intersection.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
So we're planning on climbing Cloud's Rest in about 3 weeks. Any news or input on this hike from the valley? I know there is a lot of weather happening between now and then, but is the mist trail a possibility? Party of 4 with 2 being very proficient in winter climbing/hiking and the other 2 having minimal experience. Thanksby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Looks like there is a little snow up that way.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Yeah, I was a little bummed at first, but it's so hard to stay that way when you're in a place like Yosemite! There is always next time!by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Well, I don't know what the numbers are, but I might even argue that most houses are oriented the same way. I would say that it is good common sense.by VengeanceASX - General Discussion
Yeah, I'm 200 lbs with 40lbs (240 total) of gear and I was using 25in MSR Lightning Ascents. I probably should have put my tails on, but it should be fine as soon as the sun goes down.by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Depending on your days, you shouldn't have any problems finding a spot in Camp 4. If it freezes at night, I would definitely recommend some microspikes of some sort. In three days, you should be able to explore most of the valley floor, including Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, Mirror Lake, Yosemite Falls....Should be awesome!by VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Our trip changed pretty much that morning. The ranger said Olmstead was pretty bad with the new snow, heat of the day, combined with freezing at night. We were trying for the Pinnacles the first day, but had to stop for the night at Sunrise Creek. We were sinking 2-3 feet in the afternoon with snowshoes on! the next day when we headed up, it was perfect until about 10AM, then the snow startedby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Hey guys, haven't forgotten! My wife and I bought a travel trailer and we have been busy with that and just got back. I am in the process of uploading an album. The trip was awesome! Weather was beautiful with plenty of sunshine, unfortunately it made the snow pretty dangerous up towards the top of Cloud's Rest and made it REALLY slow going! Well, I think I'm ready. My pack is good to go weighing in under 40lbs with bear canister, snowshoes, crampons, ice axe and shovel. The weather is going to be beautiful! High 40's low 20's, little wind until Sunday night. Should have some good harder stuff to walk on in the mornings. I will be giving a full trail report when I get back. We will be leaving after work today and hiking out in theby VengeanceASX - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
