I agree. Send him up Echo Peaks or to the saddle between Cockscomb and Matthes Crest. Either should wear him out within your round trip schedule. Better yet, have him go alone up the Bud Lake trail instead of Cathedral trail, over the pass at Echo peaks, traverse to the saddle, and then down to Echo Lake area. That should make his day. Jim

Remember,---if they ever come out with a green version then people will likely fight for it because it purportedly tastes better. Then the pay loader equipment arrives to clean up the mob. I think this stuff is just a refined version of what Chick-on is stuffed with. Maybe not Chinese floor sweepings but not much better.

Rangers around the country often roll their eyes when you mention Yosemite bears. They seem to be far more educated when it comes to breaking into cars for food than anywhere else. The only deer I ever hit was in Yosemite going 30 in a 35 zone. Actually, the deer hit me, launching itself off the opposite high embankment into the side of my rental. I never even saw it until it shook itself off in my rear view mirror. Now when driving in the park my head is on a swivel. Wildlife can come out of nowhere. Got to be on your toes every second.

If you have ever taken notice of wheel arrangements on locomotives the Shay has a very unusual arrangement, apparently because the tender is an integral part of the drive assembly instead of a separate car that simply follows behind.

Murphy Creek trailhead is often available as an alternate access to the Glen Aulin area. At least I think it's Murphy Creek (near Tenaya Lake). I'm not at home right now and don't have my maps handy. Somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Olde Dude "may" be on a trail much of the time but chick-on will not be. He can cover almost twice as much ground in the same amount of time as everybody that's else sticking to a trail. A detour here; a detour there, ---but he always returns to the group. Part of it is his hobby of locating survey markers. Jim

The hike to Glen Aulin would be fine for your purposes. Most of it is relatively flat until you cross the first footbridge. Until then you will get a good dose of Tuolumne Meadows topography along a tame portion of the Tuolumne River. parklover, Internet Explorer had a major hack on Tuesday and a fix was not instituted until yesterday. It had something to do with when Adobe Flash Player was utilized on Internet Explorer. You can search for "progress on Internet Explorer fix" for details. Jim

Mosquitos will be bad in June but you will find if you camp several hundred feet away from the lakes it's not really all that bad. Within 100' of the lakes they will be all over you. by the time you see the lower lake it will be time to put on a fresh dose of bug juice. Regarding the Mist trail: Lots of day hike folks never make it beyond the big footbridge across the river a little ways below Vernal Fall and the trail is actually asphalt up to the bridge. You have a clear view of Vernal Fall from the bridge. If your 3-year old peters out by the time you reach the bridge you still get to see the fall without having to navigate the slippery trail further up.
