there are places along the pass where you can still see the old road .... I grew up spending summers roaming the pass, it's a really gorgeous area. I look forward to heading up there along the PCT some time in the near future.by AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteFrank Furter Has anyone had problems with fractures in the filters from either freezing or just use related trauma like dropping the units? If these develop, do you know that the filter is not working correctly (like water coming out around seals were it is not supposed to appear, for instance)? I don't think dropping a Hiker Pro will crack the filter, but freezing isn't going to help. Wheby AlmostThere - General Discussion
I was talking to someone who remembers a past trip when she was at an open bear box, in Curry Village, actively rummaging for something - and a bear walked up beside her and she heard the huffing, sniffing noise, turned her head, and there was this bear's head just inches from her. She yelled, bear ran, and she sat there freaked out for a while. I don't car camp in Yosemite if I can help it. Sby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I had a similar re-entry (though I'm not sixty yet, there were still about fifteen years of couch-potatoing involved) to backpacking, and I had almost the same response to being in a tent. It led me to hammocks and tarps. I've been hanging all over Yosemite and surrounding areas ever since. The Yosemite trail system is definitely murder on the soles. My least-favorite are the steps and switchby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Neither has the Bearikade. The Bearikade, in terms of ratio of can base weight to volume/capacity, is the lightest can on the market.by AlmostThere - General Discussion
Yes, I know - and in the article it says the bear's been doing it for a few years.... "But reports began coming in from campers a few years ago that BearVaults were being broken into..." The Times is behind the times.by AlmostThere - General Discussion
Since I've been hearing about that for two years, it's hardly news. It's been repeated across many a backpacking forum. None of the bear canisters are bear proof - merely bear resistant. Give them enough time and they'll eventually get into them all. I'm getting a Bearikade at some point but Bear Vault is willing to replace my lid that spins past the tab, so I'm going to do that in the short tby AlmostThere - General Discussion
If you haven't booked a site in the campground, make sure you get there in the early morning to get one of the first come/first serve sites.... you can also roll the dice getting there late and hoping people cancelled and no one else got them. You may see flowers, but not as many as there was in spring... still, I've seen some brilliant wildflowers around 8500-9000 in the Sierras as late as Sby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Coming out of Hetch Hetchy after Memorial Day weekend, we saw several clusters of rangers haulting motorcyclists and bicyclists up from where they went off the road. I bet the head on collision was someone frustrated with rubbernecking tourists passing in a no-pass zone. Seen that a million times and been tempted almost as much....by AlmostThere - General Discussion
Clouds and North Dome are across the valley from each other, so they are completely different views. North Dome looks across at Half Dome... I think anything you do in Yosemite is worth it!by AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ten Lakes - the fishing in the lower lakes in the morning and evening is great, we got at least 15 good sized brookies (had to turn some loose). And we spent half an hour sitting at the top of the pass identifying peaks and enjoying the view. North Dome is a great hike.by AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
But Yosemite isn't in Bozeman. Neither is SEKI or Desolation or Emigrant or Dinkey. I think the best place to raise an outdoor kid is with an outdoor family. If you aren't motivated to go you won't take the kid. You really are not the only person who finds the Yosemite Experience frustrating. Just imagine how the rangers feel - they come into the office every single day to a pile of faxed wilderness permit requests a foot deep. Then when they are supposed to start answering the phones, they ring alllllllllll day, and when they answer there is some poor fella who's been hitting redial and listening toby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. They did in fact let him come in a day late. He had to give them my name but they let him in. The computers were down and they were backed up with requests, so they probably humored my request out of expediency. I think it might have been different were we at Tuolumne Meadows or in the valley, but Hetch Hetchy is sort of like the bastard stepchild wilderness of the park, I've never had a probby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I do the research - check the wilderness conditions page, check NOAA, read the guidebook if there's an entry on the trail, read a few forums for trip reports on the area - and call the ranger to ask about current conditions - water sources, snow level, bear activity, anything else I need to know. It's not that hard. I found the link in the text on the wilderness permit page. Form, trailheads, quotas, which ones are full... everything I need on one page for the clicking. One click on the left menu bar got me to it.
