Exactly as mkbgdns says. Except this year, there were people getting on the A list before they had confirmed reservation from the front office. Not quite fair if you already had rezzies. Last year, the reservation office was open at 9am, but we were there in June and the campground didn't even fill up.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Waited to visit Tuolumne, after the July 1 opening. Came in July 2 about 8am, no line, no traffic. Had the lower Tuolumne River to ourselves. Quite a bit of highway traffic later. No hikers? I first waved my arms and yelled Go Bear. Usually bears take off just by seeing you, like the first bear. When that didn't faze it, I threw some branches and just got some huffs. But I wanted rocks (rockslides...where is a rock when you need one?) Once I threw rocks, the bear reluctantly went up the slope after the first one.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Just remembering hiking the trail with my sis' family...four young 'uns...two in backpacks. My husband and I, plus the parents, each in charge of one boy. What an experience for everyone! This year, one of my nephews will have the same opportunity with his young sons, but I don't think that they are up to the effort to carry them up. I didn't keep track early on, when I briefly worked in the park. (Sometimes I ran up...) I like the mist trail...mostly for the way down. The biggest mistake, hiking with my nephews, was the last time going up, on the way to Half Dome. (All other times, for Half Dome, it was up the JMT.) So, yes, pad sizes helps, but as stated above...trees, rocks, bear boxes, fire pits or high bumpers can prevent the use of the entire pad. Trees on the side of the pad can prevent the uses of a slide. And, as in the case two years ago, I got my sister a site that looked fine...41 foot long, but it was only nine feet wide, Trees on both sides prevented them from backing into their site, witby hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Nice. You had one of the few bluebird days here. (We actually had four of them in a row recently.) Actually I think 41 and 38 were still available. The message at the top was different than the others. It was like so many people clicked on those sites that they were put out of action. The message said try again later. I did keep clicking on them.
