Out of six of us...none got reservations for Yosemite Valley this morning. Two got Monday to Monday reservations in Hogdon Meadows. Since I reserved a week in the valley last month, our group will be camping at different times this late spring/early summer. Of course, I can drive over and set up a tent in their site at the later date. The last time (and the only time for my husband and I)by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It was better than I could've imagined since it was a bit early in the time "window." (11th & 12th) Was not quite prepared for the crowds. I think that it will be great right after the storm...by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I wuz just curious... That lounge at Curry is nice...especially on quiet evening, in the middle of a big storm (like we experienced last winter.) Another "do you remember when"...back in the late 70's, early 80's the lounge at Yosemite lodge (now the Mountain Room Bar and conference center) was the happening place. I did a search and didn't get any results for this topic...does Yosemite Valley have free Wi Fi anywhere? I've used my sis' laptop and had to pay for service at the Yosemite Lodge when I had to make some reservations a few years back. That's all I know of.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Those troll pics are about 18 years old. (Look at how small the pine trees are by the chapel.) Guess that I'll wait and see if this site adds an attachment feature someday. As I said, I'm not actively adding photos to Webshots any more...by hikerchick395 - General Discussion
Your pic of Horse Ridge was worth the wait (to load. Told ya my dial up was slow and it doesn't even bring up photos in good quality due to "acceleration." What acceleration?) My advice is don't use photo shop. I tweaked your photo with a simple program from an old printer. It just slightly adjusted contrast and exposure, with a tiny bit of sharpening. Well, there's a "x" where the pic should appear... I have some photos at http://www.webshots.com/user/hikerchick395 They are mostly scanned prints from film. Well, the flood was in Jan of 1997 and my video was Dec 1998, so it was almost 2 years from the time of the flooding. The single lane on 140 was definately west of 140/120. And we did have video from June 1997...we drove into Yosemite Valley from 120.( From Manteca...the pass wasn'r open yet. Highway 395 through Walker Canyon didn't open til around July 4 1997...have video of that, too.) Noby hikerchick395 - General Discussion
One of my projects that I've started on this year is recording Hi8 video to DVD. (I was late to the game and got my first videocam in 1997.) Anyway this last weekend I was recording video from Dec 1998. We had to go to Curry for a craft show. It was storming so we chose to come up 140. The highway ended up being closed until 4:30 each evening because of construction, so we tried to cut arounby hikerchick395 - General Discussion
Nice crisp video with that camera...and a good length that I was actually able to view it here at home (DIAL UP...I have to try to remember to watch YouTube videos on my new laptop, when away from home.) It can be nerve wracking right up to the end...last year, our week long reservations started June 5 and Tioga Pass just opened before we got to HWY 120 (live on the east side.) The signs still said "closed." We had 4 campsites and 15 people last year. As of right now, I don't think any of our extended family got a site this year except for us.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Got mine, but my bro-in-law (on a cruise) couldn't get internet service and didn't get his. Last time that happened (for June 2007) we went to Tuolumne instead. It was a drier year, and was the perfect decision because not many people knew that the Tuolumne campground opened that early. Thanks for all of the photos... Looking at mrcondron's graph...I crossed the same bridge that first week of June. When crossing, a surge of water from the falls ripped my video camera from my grasp and into Hetch Hetchy. Nobody's seen a purple fleece covered Canon videocam between the bridge and reservoir, eh? I took a drive over yesterday despite the CalTrans phone hotline saying it was closed. The phone recording from YNP said it was open. Holy cow...seriously, had the best pizza ever! Maybe someone complained about scrimping on toppings, but at the Pizza Factory in Bishop Sunday the 8th, we seemed to have double the amount of toppings! Had lunch, then packed up 6 pieces for our first night's backpacking dinner in Sabrina Basin the next night (we were considering a samich from Subway.) One of our best backcountry dinners! We enjoy our Pizza Factory in Bishop! Yum...totally awesome. My first taste of the Pizza Factory delights were in Oakhurst (the original?) The best, in my mind, was 2008 in Lone Pine after 28 days on the John Muir Trail...heavenly. But we can always count on our Bishop PF and we can also count on the counter person wrinkling their nose when we order anchovies. Maybe it is the backing up access into the site. But we, and obviously others, if you look at the rigs in the site photos at yosemitecampsites.com, ignore those restrictions. One of our 4 sites that we have on our upcoming trip is 13' x 35' (driveway) and it has the same 12' restriction, yet in the site photo there is a 5th wheel and a truck fitting lengthwise. I was just in GSMNP for the first time (I think, unless I was there as a young'un in our travels,) and the thing that upsets me is that, with the most visitation, they do not collect an entrance fee. I tried to comment a few days ago but it took a while to register. (The registration confirmation went to junk mail.) Last week, Mono County took over at the gate at Tioga Pass (from CalTrans) to plow west to meet NPS crews.
