Thanks for the info! We always bring bikes when we visit the Valley, so I'll make sure our friends do too. It really makes it nice to get around and see more. I think our friends will be up for hikes in the 4-6 mile range. I've never done the Four Mile Trail, so that's on the list. Although, honestly, as much as I enjoy hiking, I think we'll all be happy to just hang around in the valley itself aby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I know, it's hard to think about Autumn in the early days of summer, but I'm looking ahead and already planning our next visit. In this case, we'll probably be bringing a friend or two who aren't "hardcore" hikers, and so we'll want to stay in the valley and take shorter, easier day hikes. Like I've said in other posts, we need to be a bit frugal, and won't be staying in Camp Curry likeby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I want a lighter tent for car-camping! This is the tent that my boyfriend's dad bought to go with his 1966 VW bus. On the backside, there's a large zipper panel that attaches to the open door of the bus. It's in remarkably good shape, considering the amount of camping they did when he was a kid. No holes or leaks that we can find. We take it out about twice a year (wish it was more often). It'by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Rentals... that's a great idea. I don't know why it didn't occur to me that there would be rental options. Not surprising, though. I have lots of time to do research, since I doubt we'll get out for any kind of trip before next Spring. I'm a poor unemployed college student. We're pretty frugal these days, trying to keep on top of the mortgage and keep out of debt. See our "fancy" tby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Beautiful! We're day-hikers looking to get into backpacking. Pictures like these make me want to go to REI and spend what little money I have on gear so I can start NOW.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
As it turns out, we arrived around 9 am or so on July 1, and got a campsite without a problem. In fact, there were sites still available on July 2.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's a couple of weeks after the OP is asking about, but I figured others may be curious. The mosquitoes in TM are fat and greedy right now. I got bitten within 30 seconds of getting out of the car at the campground office. D'oh!by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We took the shuttle from the TM campground to Pothole Dome for our hike to Little Devils Postpile. It was only us and one other couple, sadly. We did not take the shuttle to Porcupine Flat for our North Dome hike, since we weren't sure we'd make it back in time for the last shuttle. As it turns out, we did.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks to everyone who helped me figure out the trail here. It's not on any maps, but I found a detailed trail description in the Yosemite book by JP Schaffer (route 32). It was a great day hike for people who haven't had a chance to acclimate to the altitude, and who haven't done any real hiking in a couple of months. We started out at Pothole Dome around 11, and surprisingly were the only pby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We were just on this trail, going from Glen Aulin to TM, on Friday, July 2. The crossing at the creek in question isn't bad at all. It was a tiny bit higher than ankle deep, so we just took our shoes off and crossed quickly barefoot. We were day hiking, so our packs were light. The backpackers crossing with us had water shoes, and they didn't have any problems. There weren't any other seriousby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Oh, lovely! I'll check it out. Thanks!by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ahh... I was thinking that might be the case. This is our first trip to TM, and I'm looking for off-the-beaten-path things to look at. I imagine that most of what is accessible for day-hikes will be heavily populated. That's OK. We'll just schedule a Hetch Hetchy trip later this summer.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Reading back through these posts, and I'm intrigued by the idea of a "Little Devil's Postpile." I'm assuming by the name that it's not as impressive as the one near Mammoth. Is that the case? Is this a worthy day hike from TM?by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for your response. I'm kinda hoping that 8 am on Thursday will be good enough. I can't imagine leaving earlier than 4 am. But I'll certainly give it more thought now. If we have to change our plans, maybe we'll head back down the mountain and stay in Hetch Hetchy area. I'm sure it's lovely there too.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi y'all! I'm new to this forum, but wished I'd learned about it a long time ago. Seems like you all have loads of good advice. Speaking of advice... we're hoping to be able to celebrate our anniversary in Tuolumne Meadows. We're planning on heading up on July 1 and staying through July 5. I know, crazy, but it's the only time we can get away from work and life, sadly. I'd much rather go whenby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
