Huh. I never knew there were cedars out that way. I don't get much past Armstrong Woods, but I have driven up old Cazadero Road and out to the coast. I wonder if it's on BLM land, if it's accessible to the general public. eta: Maybe I should have read the article before commenting. Now I've added it to my to-hike areas for this year.by itchbay - General Discussion

A friend shared that on Facebook earlier. It brought tears to my eyes. I think I need to schedule a trip for after classes are done so I can have something to look forward to. Or maybe over Spring Break.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I think it's a fundamental misunderstanding about wilderness and responsibility. Quote"After the fact I realized it's the wilderness and they're not supposed to do anything, but I did go in expecting a little more of a warning," said Castillo, who plans to return. The day after Castillo called for help, a group of 20 hikers called 911, not understanding that the very rain storm tby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've never hiked solo, but often it's just me and the boy and we like our alone time. I'm a chatty person and will talk with anyone. But I'm also sensitive to the fact that some people might not want to talk back. After a polite "hello" and maybe an exchange of basic info, I'm happy to go back to just talking to myself. I'm also better about ditching people, in a kind way. "Notby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I think that would take the "accidental" part out of the title. My personal method is to stay firmly on the ground on the safe side of the guardrail. So far, so good.by itchbay - General Discussion

Dehydration. Extreme dehydration. Not carrying enough water for the trip up, and "saving" it for the hike down. On that trip, I learned firsthand how dehydration affects your perception, and often manifests as belligerence. Now I can spot it more easily in others and, hopefully, in myself if I find myself in that situation again. I'm one of those who buried her TP. Oh dear God. The Press Democrat is irritating people outside Sonoma County now? No surprise there. *sigh* OK, I guess I'll have to write a letter. Edited to add: Oh, it's a letter to the Editor? Eh... whatever. Her point that the sign that had the most impact for her was one that listed actual deaths might have some merit. His kids cried? What did expect you/the ranger to say to that? What about the poor people who can barely afford the $20 a night, and can't go because all the sites were snapped up by scalpers now charging $100? A problem he contributed to. One of the most important lessons I learned as a child was that you can't always get what you want, no matter how much you cry.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

A friend just posted a message asking for an A/C recharge service in Bishop. I dunno much more than that at the point. I know she doesn't live there, but I suspect she's on a trip in the area and her A/C is bonked. Any advice? Personally, my motto has always been "It's not an adventure if you can sue." Terrible things happen in the wilderness on occasion, and are usually made worse by human error or misjudgment. I'm not trying to add to the argument that seems to be raging on this thread. But I have some thoughts and some questions.
