Mine is similar weight. Domke bag with two primes, a tripod and some extra batteries. Half the time I don't even use the tripod or batteries. Or even the other lenses. Way too busy hauling gear around to stop and take photos.by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The way I overheard a ranger at the permit station in the valley explain it, you can cross a road and re-enter via another trailhead but the second you get in a bus or car, or buy a hot dog, your wilderness experience ends and so does your permit.by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I have to second this, I've had the pro Vario for about four years now and while I don't know about extra gizmos it has been full of problems. Basically it works great (twice as fast as the hiker) if its lubed and cleaned impeccably. I've had to strip it and clean it to alleviate minor to major issues since I bought it. My friends all have the hiker model and aside from one that had a fluke defeby steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've seen a few posts on the board talk about the makeshift system in place for getting wilderness permits in Tuolumne. I'm planning on showing up without a backcountry permit reservation next weekend looking for a first come first serve permit for that same day, with no real plan to speak of, other than preferring to start in Tuolumne. Hehe, I should clarify. There's was water everywhere. Places to fill up every quarter mile for the entire weekend. I never had an empty nalgene. I merely meant that I put off getting water for the night/cooking until the last possible second due to laziness. No dehydration risk, just hi jinks.by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The east side approach to Clouds Rest only had small patches of snow on July 16th. Following the trail was a non issue and I'd bet anything that 99% of that snow is gone now.by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I ran into sporadic snow on the 16th that presented no challenges coming from Tenaya. I would be surprised if any snow was left by now. The worst of the snow was on the Sunrise switchbacks, and it was only bad because the drifts were short enough to tempt you to walk over them and risk postholing. All of them could be circumvented. He charged down the trail at me for about 10 feet when I first saw him, it was great. Watkins was very cool, at the end of the first night I seriously debated scrapping the rest of my plans and just hanging out there. I was so beat from the hike up from the valley that I didn't go all the way to the edge or explore that 2nd dome. I may have to go back. Day 1: Snow Creek to Mt. Wakins The trail turned me into a glowering salt stained zombie. I put off getting water until the last possible minute before the Mt. Wakins saddle and then could not find the water near the saddle I had noted after it got dark. After contemplating the water content of my shot blocks, I stumbled around in the dark for an hour until I found the puddle. Day 2:by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I don't recall what the determination was either, but I have a permit for next week for Mirror Lake to Snow Creek, and the ranger did not balk at me saying I would head over to Olmsted point and over to the lake and up via Sunrise the 2nd night, she even warned me the crossing at Tenaya could be wet. I guess I'm not technically stepping on the road... or at least I don't intend to. Maybe a loop lby steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the advice everyone. My wife and I had a blast. I expected it to be gorgeous but I didn't realize it was going to be that gorgeous. It's the first time I've gone backpacking, not made it all the way to any of my desired destinations, but still came back ecstatic. Quotechick-on Quoteeeek It's very hard for anyone to tell you how much snow there will be. Sigh. And with that I give up giving trail advice. I like that one as much as "you should just call the ranger and ask". Have fun (and please post a picture of frozen over Sunrise Lake if you should make it there) I don't follow, I wasn't really asking for someone's estimation. I understand. I was hoping someone had been up there to see it firsthand... Is it safe to infer that the 8-10 feet of snow that's currently on Tioga is about how much will be on the JMT at comparable elevation? I was hoping, pipe dream perhaps, that the answer would be no, due to sun or magic or something.by steelcup - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hello, I have a reservation for a Happy Isles/Sunrise Lakes pass through permit for memorial weekend and I'm having a hard time determining how much snow there be on the ground near where I plan to camp the first night (Past the JMT/Half Dome trail junction near Moraine dome).
