QuoteJRinGeorgia FYI, temperature has nothing to do with the amount/intensity of the sun's radiation reaching your skin. D'oh! Of course. Yup, didn't think about that one. Reminds me of when I was in LA a couple of years back, and got a bit burned, even though it wasn't hot, and the sun didn't come out all day! Cheers guys. Hi all, hope everyone is well. Quick question for you all, if I may. From July 4th, I am in the valley, and then traversing the terrain between Mono Pass, and Glacier point for a week. With the current high temperatures you guys have been experiencing, would it be prudent to upgrade my sunblock when high in the mountains? I had SPF25, but was wondering if I should aim higher? Amazing photos! Really makes me look forward to flying out there next week. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I will be in the valley from the 4th of July onwards. Is that area likely to be affected? Wouldn't mind trying some lighting photography, as we so rarely get big storms here in the UK anymore. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
yup, I was very lucky with the weather. To get three days with not one drop if rain, in Wales is very impressive. After tackling the scary Crib Goch ridge, I am now fancying a go at the Snowdon Horseshoe route, which is about 8 hours worth of high, knife edge ridge walking. It was good training thanks, and showed me the value of a lightweight pack. I can still save more weight by removingby TechieSteve - General Discussion
Fantastic pics, thanks. Is that Helen Lake in the view towards Lyell? I am hopefully staying at Mono pass (just outside the park border, of course) in July, so it is nice to see that snow coverage isn't too bad, and I hear it is melting quick. What is the route from Gibbs to Dana like at the moment? Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Sorry, "remain" out of view lol Yes, camping illegally. 'Wildcamping' is legal in Scotland, but in England and Wales it is indeed illegal. In the Peak District, it is generally not tolerated, and the rangers will move you on if they find you. The lake district tends to allow it, as long as certain conditions are met. The rules of wildcamping illegally, are generally to setup aby TechieSteve - General Discussion
Day three... As I didn't hit my planned camping area the night before, I had to be up very early, so as to reamin out of sight of the day hikers who may start out early, so, a 5am breakfast was called for... This beautiful spot was where I intended to spend the night. It was a fantastic place. Stopped her for second breakfast, and a well deserved "wilderness wash" Thiby TechieSteve - General Discussion
I don't know if anyone is finding these interesting, but I am going to post days two and three... Shesh. Thats terrible, lol. No, pretty much didn't see anyone on this first day, but at one point the fog was so thick I wouldn't have known if somebody was stood more than about 20 meters away. Steveby TechieSteve - General Discussion
Hi all! Well, it's 4 weeks today until I arrive in the valley for my summer holiday, so I thought I had better get some more training in for my 6 day hike I plan to do when I get there. As such, on top of the increased amount of day hikes I have been doing, this weekend I spent three days exploring the more remote parts of Wales, here in the UK. I thought I would share a few pics from myby TechieSteve - General Discussion
I recently tried Viewranger on my Galaxy S, and Motorola Xoom on a hike in the Peak District here in the UK. Fantastic software. I can use it with a variety of maps, and don't need a data connection when out in the hills. The PC/web based part of it is fantastic for planning routes. I will be using it again in Wales in a couple of weeks, to fully test it before I head to Yosemite in July.by TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Boo! Failure in the lottery. What a shame to be going all that way, then hiking all the way from Bloody Canyon, to Glacier point, right past the foot of Half Dome, but not up it. Grumpy now! lol Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotebasilbop Edit: Also, if "TechieSteve" is really a techie, then it has to be the high-tech carbon-fiber canister designed by former (?) aerospace engineers :-) Yes, I am a Technican - a Theatre Technician in fact! Hi all! A quick one this. Which bear can would you fine people recommend for a 6-7 day solo trip? I have looked at the list of approved ones, and think that these two look pretty good: BearVault 500 Lighter1 Big Daddy I can't stretch to a Bearicade They both see fairly similar in price, size, and weight. The thought had crossed my mind to be honest, however the penalties do seem enough to put me off! lol I do have the option of hitting it very early or late in the day, but wanted to keep it legal, just in case. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hiking from from Walker Lake, up Bloody Canyon, and backpacking across to (hopefully) Glacier point, and down to the valley. HD on the way through, because I may as well seeing as I am walking past it. Cathedral lakes trailhead, and Bloody Canyon trailhead permits secured, just waiting on HD now! QuoteJRinGeorgia How did they mess up? Did they forget to put you in the lottery, or did they put you in and you lost and then they made the mistake of processing your wilderness permit anyway? Depending on that I might ask them for some kind of special consideration. If they forgot to put you into the lottery at all, you might think that they would try to accommodate you. The advantage is that they have said they will be releasing figures through the month, showing how popular certain dates are, so if you do not have a specific date in mind, you can wait until the end of the month to see which dates are less popular, and hence, will give you better odds in the lottery. So anyone in that situation, would be best advised to wait until near the end of the month. Notby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That surely cant be right? What you are describing is not a lottery at all. Confussed. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was under the impression that time was not a factor? I thought that the lottery is open all month, and drawn at the start of April? In fact, the website itself says you can increase your chances by looking at the statistics near then end of March, and applying on days that have had less applicants. Thanks, that makes me feel a little better, as I do have a two day window for it. Would just involve changing my hike slightly. I will apply later. Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wish they had just processed my wilderness permit correctly, so I didn't have to enter the lottery. It would be very annoying to walk past Half Dome, but not be able to go up it. Good luck to everybody! Going to be a very stress filled month while we wait for the results! I too am in the Valley on the 4th of July ( didn't plan it that way, it was just kinda an accident lol ). I was wondering the same thing. This will be my first ever 4th of July, as I am flying over from the UK, so am eager to soak up any atmosphere or events that there may be. And to answer my own question, my chances look to be about 30-40%, going by the publised figures. At least I am not climbing on a weekend! Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yup, they messed up, but all permits are now gone, so I am left with the lottery, or a walk up permit the day before. I don't much fancy my chances of getting a walk-up permit the day before, as I don't expect to arrive in Tuolumne Meadows from Mono Pass until late in the afternoon. Lottery it is then! lol What are my chances?! Steveby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteJayabrams Looks like you'll need to call and make sure there's none available (for BPer's) for your time frame and if not...I think the walk-up process may be your best bet. You must not have requested them on your original application, or there were none available at the time.. Thanks guys. Hi all I have a quick question about Wilderness Permits. I managed to bag a permit for the Cathedral Lakes trailhead, exiting via Glacier Point, and requested Half Dome on the form, but on the confirmation email, the number of people listed as climbing Half Dome is zero. Is this right? I understand I have to pay the extra $8 for Half Dome when I pick up my Permit, but is this possiblby TechieSteve - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
