I've hiked the GCT when White Wolf was closed. You just won't have services (potable water, restrooms, store) there, but you can still camp in the backpackers' camp and draw water from the creek. I'd be concerned whether the creek has water now, though. And the GCT is really too hot this time of year. I wouldn't choose it after May. Hitchhiking shouldn't be difficult. Look for Subarus. We are considering primarily two different routes. Alot will just depend on how my kids are feeling. They are 18 and 16 and have done some significant backpacking but this will be their longest trip. They also tend to enjoy stopping more, exploring, messing around, like normal teenagers so planning can sometimes be a little difficult but it is worth it to see their love of the outdoors blossomingby Creakyknees - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I've been occasionally using that route for decades and it is just that a route and not a trail although one will see many use paths in places. The wiser strategy is not to expect to stay on some trail but rather use a cross country strategy, hiking on use paths if they happen to be there. In other words know where you are going instead of trying to follow a trail or cairns piled by the clueleby DavidSenesac - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

It's a fine day hike. Even if you can't make it all the way to Glen Aulin, there's a lot of good stuff to see along the way even if you have to turn back early. If you're new to the Tuolumne area, I'd skip the Murphy Creek trail--there's some interesting stuff along it, but it stays mostly in the forest. The Glen Aulin trail has much more trailside scenery. We arrived in Yosemite on Sunday evening and were amazed to find campsites available at Porcupine Flat. In fact, the campground was more than half empty all night…and they had spaces at the Tuolumne Meadows campground as well. Hi all, thanks for the input. I will be sure to go past Rogers Lake, and do Volunteer Peak :-) About the final portion, after getting back to Glen Aulin HSC, I have chosen to head South there, but Chick-On, you reccomended going out the Pothole Dome route? Since it doesn't look like we'll be getting winter this... winter, we found ourselves yet again in Yosemite making hay--and miles--while the sun shines. The plan--something involving fractional domes. The Half Dome cables were of course down for the season. Trip Dates: June 27-29, 2014 The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne (or the GCT) was one of the first extended backpacking trips my wife and I did. For some reason, the canyon itself didn't really resonate with us then; we much preferred the "return" portion of our loop, passing by the Tuolumne Tarns, the South Fork of Cathedral Creek, and the Ten Lakes Basin. In what has become a bit of a tradition, we once more found ourselves wandering down the Tuolumne River towards Waterwheel Falls soon after the opening of the Tioga Road.
